I was very surprised to see a bank of pay phones while walking in Manhattan last week. I thought they had gone the way o the dinosaurs.

But I still keep a flashlight in the house.

Lessay you wanna simply inquire over the telephone about an expensive good or service:

In the old days you could use a public phone to do that, and you wouldn’t later get solicitation phone calls from that company, in case you got cold feet and backed out.

Now, that’s much, much harder, as public phones are a rarity.

Smart phones are quite impractical for most of the country as there is not that much cell coverage.

I didn’t see PRINTED BOOKS on the list. Or PRINTED NEWSPAPERS.

Not gone yet but surely in big decline.

Having a tuner, a multi-track recorder, a virtual keyboard, a white noise generator, signal analyzer and dB meter at every gig is nice.

Clearly, the author never used the HP 12C. Not only is this da bomb, but you can throw it at a wall (usually after the NPV comes back negative) and it won't break.

A few EMPs plus a major grid failure = largely phucked.

Not to worry. Jesus has it all under control. No kidding.

It’s not the future that our elders promised to us when we were kids – I mean, where are the flying cars?

I’ll trade in the dumbphone for a Rocket Pack.

However, IF I forget to charge my phone it does none of those, so I keep flashlights and have a landline to name two.

Flashlight? Nope. Try hitting someone with a 3D cell Maglite vs. an iPhone. Or try changing your tire lit by your phone. Your cell phone lightis good for finding where your flashlight rolled to.

Camera? Maybe all the times when I've said "I wish I had a camera now", but even a $100 camera with a 10x zoom lens beats any phone. And that's not getting into good cameras.

I have a handsize tac light in most rooms, two have the cool jagged edge. And my Swiss Army has an LED.
When I take a picture I may use my phone, a Galaxy 8, but if I want to take a photograph it’s my Nikon d3300, or if I have ektachrome available it’s my Canon A1.
I still have my landline and it’s better as suited for 911 calls.
I still use AAA and Hagstom maps.
I print important pics.
I still use my wife’s address book.
Call me old fashioned, old school. Or just Old.

Great article. Thanks. List:

Landlines - payphones - Flashlights - Calculators - Timers - Guitar tuners - Cameras - Photo albums - Alarm clocks - Maps/GPS - Address books.

True. My iPhone has replaced everything, thankfully.

The seniors (over 80) in my family use landlines, address books, paper calendars, television news, alarm clocks, kitchen timers, photo albums, and percolators.

“But I still keep a flashlight in the house.”

I just bought two. Now I have 5. One for the car, four for the house. I almost always have my phone with me but I keep flashlights mostly for emergencies. When I lose power, I don’t want to waste smartphone battery power by using it as a flashlight. Don’t really like running my car just to charge my phone.
