In Matthew Whitaker, Trump has a loyalist at the helm of the Justice Department

Matthew G. Whitaker, President Trump’s pick to temporarily helm the Justice Department, provides Trump with the leader he has long sought at the law enforcement agency: a political loyalist critical of the special counsel probe.

Before Whitaker joined the Trump administration as a political appointee, the Republican lawyer and legal commentator complained that special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation of Russian interference in the election and of the Trump campaign was dangerously close to overreaching. He suggested ways it could be stopped or curtailed and urged his followers on Twitter to read a story that dubbed the investigators “Mueller’s lynch mob.”

Now — at least on an interim basis — Whitaker will assume authority over that investigation, an arrangement that has triggered calls by Democrats for him to recuse himself.

In a statement Wednesday, Whitaker said he was “committed to leading a fair Department with the highest ethical standards, that upholds the rule of law, and seeks justice for all Americans.”

Before joining the Justice Department in 2017 as Sessions’s chief of staff, Whitaker served as U.S. attorney in Iowa, made an unsuccessful U.S. Senate bid and ran a conservative watchdog group. For a time, he served on the advisory board of an invention-promotion company that was shut down earlier this year amid a Federal Trade Commission investigation, records show.

Fellow conservatives cast Whitaker’s political background as an asset. “There’s so many things that fall within the Justice Department’s responsibility that lie at the intersection of law and politics that you really need to be knowledgeable and able to see the issue in both political and legal terms,” said former deputy attorney general George J. Terwilliger III.

Like Obama had a loyalist in Eric Holder. But the WaPo didn't care about that

Nor did they care when Holder's actions led to the murder of two Border Patrol agents...and Obama shielded the DOJ documents by using executive privilege.

Rush will likely have a montage tomorrow of all the talking Heads using the term “loyalist”

The NYT’s has a piece tonight online also using that very term in it’s headline

Why does it require four people to write nonsense? Even if this is true, the compost has an ulterior motive in its publication. “Never let the truth get in the way of the agenda.”

My bet is if it were true the Compost wouldn’t be publicizing it.

Good.

It’s laughable that having a loyalist as AG is presented as unusual or bad.

Holder was an Obama loyalist. He even called himself Obama’s wingman.

JFK had his brother.

Bluntly, in Matt Whitaker, President Trump has an extremely competent acting Attorney General who's a bonafide Washington, DC outsider!!

Did the press ever describe Obama appointees as loyalists?

I spent time with Matt at the University of Iowa. I hope is able to do what is right in the face of enormous pressure. I will be praying for him!

Whitaker is from Iowa, educated in Iowa, worked in Iowa. He has been in DC one year. No connection to the DCDS FBI and DOJ. The guy I’ve been praying for.

Trump did not pick Whitaker for his great legal mind, or for his vast experience in the highest levels of government. He picked him for his extreme loyalty. On this the stories are correct.

Matt has always been very decent to me. He’s a nice guy. I sincerely pray that he is not in over his head, and that the powers-that-be in DC don’t chew him up and spit him out.

By the way, there are some who are asking whether the pick of Whitaker is even legal. The claim is that it has to be someone previously approved by the Senate.

Whether this is correct or not, I do not know.

Have you seen how big he is?
He’s also needed in the Press room passing the mic.
That might produce a little more civility from the press.

Checkmate. Now the Dems will accept anyone Trump nominates for AG, if just to save themselves from Whitaker.
I hope he keeps Whitaker for the rest of his term.
