Why soda taxes don't work
The Washington Times ^ | June 24, 2018 | Adam Brandon

Time and again we hear politicians from different parts of the country profess the virtues of a soda tax. Their reasoning ranges from wanting to improve the public health, by cutting back consumption of unhealthy drinks, to talking about how much revenue it will bring in.

This proclivity of nanny statists to push policies to change people’s behavior hues quite closely to Einstein’s definition of insanity: Trying the same thing over and over, expecting different results. Policy makers of all stripes need to abandon their affinity for soda taxes.

Put simply, soda taxes just don’t work. Take Berkeley, California, as an example. The city implemented a one cent-per-ounce tax in 2014, which could increase costs by almost 75 percent. A study conducted at Duke University showed that the tax has had little to no effect on obesity, and other related health issues. Another study showed that caloric intake from taxed beverages only went down six calories per day. It turns out the government cannot tax people into good health.

The story remains the same in Philadelphia, a city that implemented its own soda tax of one-and-a-half cents-per-ounce last year. Instead of taking in increased revenues from consumers, Oxford Economics found that instead the tax drove consumers out of the city. Beverage sales decreased in Philadelphia by 24 percent. Sales increased by 14 percent in the surrounding area. The soda tax, like most all taxes, hurts small businesses in the process. In this case, it also failed to produce the revenue it sought.

Sugar increases the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Large-scale studies have shown that the more high-glycemic foods (those that quickly affect blood sugar), including foods containing sugar, a person consumes, the higher his risk for becoming obese and for developing diabetes and heart disease1.

>And other people’s food choices are none of your business.

Sugar isn’t a food, it’s a drug. Would you be fine with people giving their kids cocaine? I’m not.

>Now go take a long walk off a short pier.

Buck off bucko.

“Sugar isn’t a food, it’s a drug.”

A drug? Nonsense———it’s a preservative and a sweetener.

As far as the diseases go,too much caffeine can be bad for the heart, cat hair can cause asthma, too much alcohol can destroy the liver, too much of anything, including water, can kill you.

Get a life.

Random web hit:
Coffee Versus Coca-Cola. If you’re cutting back on caffeine, Coca-Cola is the clear choice. The soft drink contains 5 milligrams of caffeine per ounce, while the diet version contains just 3.75 milligrams per 12 ounces. This compares to anywhere from 12 to 30 milligrams of caffeine per ounce of coffee.Oct 3, 2017

Coffee has a much larger hit of caffeine than coke and I’ve never seen anyone act like those kids did from a Coffee. Caffeine takes 10 minutes to kick in. What you were seeing is all sugar.

Wow, man. That’s compelling proof. A kid acts like my nephews acted at that age when they were not allowed soda at all! It’s a myth. Of course, you probably believe in anthropomorphic global warming.

Do we put booze in everything we consume? We do with sugar. Almost everything we consume has some sugar in it these days.

The health problems caused by it just continues to skyrocket as we put more and more of it into our food supply. If we didn’t have drugs to restrain diabetes 30 Million Americans would be dead from the disease, a disease that is almost certainly caused by sugar consumption.

Here’s the stats:
http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-basics/statistics/

Prevalence: In 2015, 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4% of the population, had diabetes.

Approximately 1.25 million American children and adults have type 1 diabetes.

Undiagnosed: Of the 30.3 million adults with diabetes, 23.1 million were diagnosed, and 7.2 million were undiagnosed.

Prevalence in Seniors: The percentage of Americans age 65 and older remains high, at 25.2%, or 12.0 million seniors (diagnosed and undiagnosed).

New Cases: 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year.

Prediabetes: In 2015, 84.1 million Americans age 18 and older had prediabetes.

Deaths: Diabetes remains the 7th leading cause of death in the United States in 2015, with 79,535 death certificates listing it as the underlying cause of death, and a total of 252,806 death certificates listing diabetes as an underlying or contributing cause of death.

“Coffee has a much larger hit of caffeine than coke”

Of course it has,but very small children don’t drink coffee.

This was a small child, low body weight, getting a “hit” of caffeine.

It takes minute to get the hit from caffeine. Did that kid have a reaction minutes late or seconds late?

Since being diagnosed as a diabetic, I have given up ALL packaged drinks.

I drink unsweetened iced tea. PERIOD! (Also a couple cups of coffee per day)

No soda, no beer (an occasional NA beer when out), no milk, nothing.

NO DEPOSITS, NO RETURNS, a yuge bonus.

No sugar, no artificial sweeteners, no releasing of CO2 into the atmosphere, I’m helping to save the planet! /s

Mr. Coffee Iced Tea Maker makes it easy! I do add a splash of lime juice.
