The shooting, the family said, was an attempted robbery that unfolded as Shirley Chan and Hong Zheng returned home from work.
It was the fifth time that someone had tried to rob or break into their home since 2015. The family believes they are among a group of Asians who are being targeted because they own restaurants and people think they have money, they said.
...
It was pouring rain on Sunday night when Chan and Zheng pulled into their driveway. There two children, Jade and Eastern, 16, were watching in the house for them to return, a routine they had established after four previous robberies or break-ins, a family friend said.
Chan got out of car first as her husband pulled the car farther up the driveway.
Jades brother, Eastern, said he saw two cars, parked and turned off, with nine or more people. When Chan got out of the car, Jade saw three or four people start approaching her mother.
Eastern grabbed a gun and a magazine of ammunition from inside the house and gave it to his mother.
They shot at my mom at least three times, Jade said. My mom tried to assemble the gun.
The gun jammed, and the attackers were running up to the house, Chan said. She was trying to protect her son and wasnt thinking about her husband who was still parking the car.
They ran away, so my mom ran back and forth trying to get my brother safe, Jade said. And she called my Dad, and he didnt respond back.
Chan went to the car and saw a bullet hole in the window; her husband lay in his seat unresponsive.
He had been shot twice in the face and once his neck, Jade said.

Just read the comments, lots of arm chair commandos here.........
Indeed. Having a gun means training how to use, and training to make your mind clear on when to use it.
I have no doubt, particularly depending on the neighborhood, these Chinese business owners would be targeted because they own businesses. That’s how it is in the “the hood.”
“No description of the perps.”
Of course not. This is telling =>
“A spokesman for the Durham Police Department said the department could not immediately respond to questions about the case.”

I don't think the teenagers were trained in defensive combat as you apparently were and were overwhelmed by the 9 individuals who stormed the house...........
The first and foremost thing in my mind if I was a teenager was to hide to save my life. I don't think I would be concerned about hanging around the front door or living room window trying to write down the makes of the vehicles and their license plates...........Sheesh!
i want to know why the parents, after being robbed several times, didn’t have enough situational awareness to notice two cars each filled with people, and then drive by without stopping. Or the children sitting watch didn’t notice the cars. Or why there was no video system they could scan the street with.
Sometimes some members of a family will collude to kill another. You could almost hope that is what happened here, and that there aren’t murdering robbers at large. Or you could hope that such a betrayal didn’t happen.
"...why, why, why..."
This is a tragic story. Sad.
>>Any thoughts on how this family could have done better, if they were able to retrace their steps?<<
As others have said, it’s not enough to just own a firearm. There are three other prerequisites for effective self-defense: (1) the weapon must be accessible and loaded; (2) the user must know how it works; and (3) the user must be psychologically prepared to kill all assailants without hesitation.
>>The correct response was either to not resist or overwhelming firepower.<<
Not resisting would probably have gotten all of them killed.
Overwhelming firepower is really the only correct response.
>>Blame the anti-gun propaganda for the family not having reddily available protection.<<
The anti-gun propaganda is the product of the leftists (liberals, progressives, socialists, communists, etc.), the majority of whom come south from New York and New England. Also the anti-gun propaganda comes from the anti-American colleges and universities in North Carolina. BUT. . .all adults ultimately are responsible for their own self-defense, and those who succumb to the anti-gun propaganda must be prepared to suffer the adverse consequences. Sad, but that’s just the way it is.
