I think it is the stupid CAFE standards that screwed our cars up more than anything else.
They did and EPA administrator Scott Pruitt is addressing this.
Pruitt is hitting the brakes on Obama's failed fuel economy standards
“I think it is the stupid CAFE standards that screwed our cars up more than anything else.”
Very true. The CAFE standards didn’t apply to light trucks and SUVs initially. We used to purchase three-seat station wagons for our growing family, but CAFE put those vehicles out of business. So we switched to SUVs about 15 years ago, because they are safer by far, are much more comfortable, and in our case buying several Chevrolet Avalanches, we have a luxury pick up capability as well. With their LS engines, these vehicles run a couple hundred thousand miles easily. They are 4 wheel drive so we can go skiing or haul debris off of our hillside property. And at the end of the day, the convenience outweighs the fuel bills for us. Just wish GM would put the Avalanche back into production, because we have one of the last one’s built (2013) and it now has 80,000 miles on it.
Yeah, the CAFE have forced the engineering of cars that look like scarab beetles. All of them. I remember when introduction of new cars was a treat every year. Now, who cares? You know what they’re going to look like.
My 2003 tudor is the last car I’ll ever buy, not needing the hauling capacity of an SUV. But the predominance of vision-blocking SUVs is becoming evident on the road now. Driving is something I do less and less of anyway. Now, get off my lawn!

It is. And the big democrat plan to have us paying $8-$9/gallon for gas is shitcanned...at least for the time being.
We should get rid of the corporate average fuel economy standards. Let the market decide and let people have choices of what sort of vehicle they want. Personally, I tend to drive intermediate size cars, and they get decent gas mileage. But that’s my choice. If there is a major market for different types of vehicles, let people have that choice.
We could even make a political statement here. Liberals urge us to be pro-choice on the abortion issue, but on many other issues, they restrict our choices of how to live our lives.
Jerry Seinfeld on his Comedians Getting Coffee Netflix show said as he and Joel Hodgson got out of a 63 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia and looked around in a parking lot and said today’s cars all look like oatmeal. Meaning all looked plain looking. Joel said they were grinding off all the edges.
