A caravan of Central American migrants whose trek across Mexico infuriated President Donald Trump has decided not to travel to the US border, leaders said Tuesday.
"We will wrap up our work in Mexico City," said Irineo Mujica, the head of the migrant advocacy group People Without Borders (Pueblo sin Fronteras).
"We have support teams at the border if there are people who need assistance there, but they would have to travel on their own," he told AFP in the town of Matias Romero, in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca.
The just over 1,000 migrants who currently make up the caravan -- many traveling in families of up to 20 people -- have been camped in the southern town since the weekend, deciding their next move in the face of daily attacks from Trump.
The Republican president vowed to send the US military to secure the border and threatened to axe the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) if Mexico did not stop the caravan.
The caravan is in fact a yearly event whose goal is more to raise awareness about the plight of migrants than to reach the United States -- though some participants have traveled to the border in the past.
Mujica said this year's caravan was so large it would have been dangerous to travel to the border by train-hopping.

And then, Trump needs to send even more armed personnel and equipment. And more. And more. He should do this until there is that serious physical wall stretching from San Diego to the Gulf of Mexico.
Think something of how the East Germans militarized the border with West Berlin until that wall went up. Except this one will be YUUUUGER!
Mexico doesn't want them and is probably advising them to sneak across the border in small groups so they can get their free EBT cards, free housing vouchers, free medical cards, free cell phones, and some free money to tide them over until the monthly benefits kick in.
Ah, yes: That deadly “nuclear option” of the Senate really scared them!
I don’t believe it.
If I were one of these migrants and had been told the mission was to get into the U.S.A. I would not want to give up AND ALSO end up in Mexico City. No way.
There’s nothing to stop these folks from continuing and this is most likely a ruse to make us complacent.
Love That Smile !!
In a not very funny situation, I had to laugh.
I read somewhere where they thought President Trump was going to nuke them because he kept calling for “the nuclear option.”
I’m so happy Pres stayed strong.
I say B/S. They have not come this far to turn back.
They know it's gonna get worse the further north they go!
Ooooo...you said the “p” word! LOL!
“There are a lot of stretches where they are in the middle of nowhere. Its incredibly hot and dry and deserted. What would happen in those places?”
They’ll get picked off by the cartels and the women and children sold into sex slavery.
Its simple. https://t.co/sRIB87b2wl— Sebastian Gorka DrG (@SebGorka) April 4, 2018
@SebGorka: If you are seeking asylum then you have to seek asylum in the first country that provides it after you leave your country. #Hannity
The first country was Guatemala and then Mexico.
If they didn't ask for asylum in either of those countries they CAN not keep moving and try to do it in the USA.
Leftist fake news/made up news/ BuzzFeedNews "reporters" are embedded with the caravan.
I'm sure they are trying to keep the caravan going, it fits with their agenda.
They should be arrested for a multitude of crimes reported here on Free Republic and sent to Gitmo.
Glenn Beck was already getting his soccer balls ready.
He just made them Mexico’s problem. They deserve it.

Ding, ding, ding - we have a thread winnah!
>> People Without Borders
Interlopers.
Yeah such horse shifft. They will split up now with their 2-4 coyotes and 30-40 people per group and head for the border. There they will split again into probably two groups and cross and head to some big city.
The groups that make it (about 90%+) will reassemble for a YUGE group photo to wag it in our faces. The ones that get caught will be home free anyway, so they are WINNING too.
Put the damn military on the border. PLUG the holes and secure the damn border NOW. Write your "proclamation" after the matinee.
