A pedestrian walkway in Miami collapsed on Thursday, killing several people.
The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed the fatalities after multiple vehicles were crushed by the span near Florida International University's campus.
According to Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue, there were people on the bridge and several cars underneath it.
Miami-Dade Fire Chief Dave Downey said they found eight vehicles trapped under the bridge after they got a call alerting the fire department of the incident. Eight victims were transported to local hospitals, but he said the authorities planned to continue search and rescue throughout the evening.

A friend of mine lives a couple of blocks from there on 8th St. His friend was on the way to see him. She decided to take 8th St. to see the new bridge but traffic was at a standstill so that she took Flagler St. instead. When she got to his house she found that the bridge had just collapsed before she got there.

The engineer probably had to take the new Social Justice math.

Irritating that in the US we have 3rd world construction, incompetence of stress testing while letting cars drive under the bridge, and everything in Spanish, which highlights the 3rd world sh1th01e that Miami has become.

There is an engineering company somewhere that will be working all night checking the calculations of one of their engineers.

I saw the end of the structure prior to collapse.
I believe it is post tension ed concrete. That is tension is applied to the lengthwise cables after placement ABC news aside, i suspect the cables were being tensioned as opposed to being tested

Find out if anyone involved was affected by the crazy SJW movement to free engineering and construction from "rigor" (academic and scientific rigor ..... just white male masculinist nonsense, you know).
From Purdue's Dean of Engineering Education:
One of rigors purposes is, to put it bluntly, a thinly veiled assertion of white male (hetero)sexuality, she writes, explaining that rigor has a historical lineage of being about hardness, stiffness, and erectness; its sexual connotationsand links to masculinity in particularare undeniable. Hence, Riley remarks that My visceral reaction in many conversations where I have seen rigor asserted has been to tell parties involved (regardless of gender) to whip them out and measure them already.
Riley also argues that academic rigor can be used to exclude women and minorities, saying, Rigor may be a defining tool, revealing how structural forces of power and privilege operate to exclude men of color and women, students with disabilities, LGBTQ+ people, first-generation and low-income students, and non-traditionally aged students.
She claims that rigor can reinforce gender, race, and class hierarchies in engineering, and maintain invisibility of queer, disabled, low-income, and other marginalized engineering students, adding that decades of ethnographic research document a climate of microaggressions and cultures of whiteness and masculinity in engineering.
She evens contends that scientific knowledge itself is gendered, raced, and colonizing, asserting that in the field of engineering, there is an inherent masculinist, white, and global North bias...all under a guise of neutrality.

They put up the bridge before the suspension structure was in place.
What were they thinking?

That was not a bridge. That was the equivalent of the 1X6 board I pushed across the stream at age 7 when I was hoping to not get my feet wet. (all of me got wet).
That bridge was obviously not designed and built by Nat Taggart, (or even by Dagny Taggart and Hank Rearden).
Looks more like something Jim Taggart and Wesley Mouch would design with the primary intent of ripping off the taxpayers.
