Avid Bookshop shut down its annual book fair at Athens Academy on Wednesday after one of the Oconee County private school’s administrators told bookstore staffers to remove a book with gay characters, “The Best Man” by award-winning writer Richard Peck.
The Athens bookstore put up a lengthy post about the episode on Facebook headlined “Avid Bookshop faces discrimination, censorship, and homophobia at the Athens Academy spring book fair.”
“After the book was removed, we were told that it had to be completely hidden from view and placed back in a box so no child could accidentally discover it,” according to the post. “Later, the director of the lower school requested that all of our books be reviewed by the administration for more ‘objectionable’ (which we interpreted as ‘queer’) content and all those books be removed as well.”
Athens Academy Head of School John Thorsen later sent out a letter to Athens Academy parents and others calling what happened at the book fair — for children ages 3 to 9 — “a deeply regrettable set of circumstances that is not consistent with our welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment.”
Several parents had “raised concerns over a book that contained situations they were not yet prepared to discuss with their young children, and a decision was made to remove the book to a more discreet location,” Thorsen wrote, calling the situation “an anomaly that does not accurately reflect the values of inclusivity and diversity that we hold dear to our hearts. ... Athens Academy does not support censorship or discrimination in any form, and we regret any misinterpretation of these circumstances and our commitment to respecting the varying viewpoints of our community.”

The new pagans demand they be allowed to recruit homosexual partners in grade school.
As a private business the school has every right to tell another private business that they cannot use the school’s property to advance an agenda the school doesn’t agree with or simply doesn’t want promoted on their property. By the same token, the book store has every right to decline to use the school’s property if they were barred from advancing their agenda.
And of course the pro homosexual crowd trots out all the name calling. Good for Athens Academy!
Atlanta has got a sizable same-sex community. Children should not be sexualized until they achieve puberty. Then their own bodies will start talking to them.
Facebook banned me for 7 days. Last Friday I was supposed to be allowed back in.
They asked if I thought they were being unfair.
So I replied:
“For us old guys it’s hard for us to know what they consider offensive.
I looked for ways to block Jenner on Facebook, there are none.
I don’t care if they’re gay, just don’t push it in my face constantly.
I used to subscribe to Playboy, I didn’t push it in everybody’s face.
My wife and I did chuckle quietly from a distance when her grandmother picked one up.
They didn’t put Playboys in barber shops or at the dentist.
I found the number of news articles on gay people offensive.
So I commented, “Do you have to be gay to be a reporter”.”
They tacked on another 7 day suspension.
This is exactly why Russia made that anti-homo recruiting/teaching law that freaked out Obama and Hillary.
This is not a simple problem. I have no opinion whatsoever as to what adults read. But including certain topics where children can view or read adult material should be prohibited.
Has anyone ever seen XXX-rated homo magazines in the supermarket?

Although not stated, this must be a private school.
The parents need to find new schools, or check beforehand if it is run by perverts or pervert sympathizers.
Censorship is illegal only as it applies to government.
A lame Supreme Court decision to the contrary can, and should be revisited. Sex education for children (real children, under 13) and its perversions, should be prohibited.
There is no mention in the Constitution about special pervert rights.
How about cannibal schools? Do they also qualify?
Sex-related matters should be the exclusive bailiwick of responsible, mentally healthy parents.
Last week I had four postings on FB labeled spam. I post a lot of political stuff some articles I see here. I post a lot of political cartoons. The first post was “How Girls Get Stoned In Various Countries.” The photos show three western countries in which women are smoking pot or hitting a bong. The fourth square show a pile of rocks and four men’s hands reaching to pick up rocks. The first notice said i did not meet community standards and was being discriminatory. When i inquired i was told it was labeled as spam.
I have posted a lot of politics for over 2 years on FB. Please don’t borate with leave. My family and friends are there and i want to be there. I believe it is a monopoly or trust and shouldn’t ban people for political views. I also suggested they have a FB for political media and another for social media. that’s what FR is political media.
They never responded to me directly, but they re-posted all of the four they had blocked. I also think they react to any complaint without using discretion. i have seen some of that on FR. Complain to some mods and you get slapped or deleted even though your post is misinterpreted or no worse than others which are left up.
FB, google, and Twitter, and others should provide freedom of speech and search capabilities because they are in effect trusts.
Ah, but the school IMMEDIATELY caved and fell all over itself apologizing and pledging homage to the God of Diversity.

This is indeed a private school in predominately red county, not sure why they brought in a book store from downtown Athens, which is predominately blue. If you need a good laugh look at Oconee County Sheriff’s Department on FB they are hilarious. This school also cost more to attend than UGA.
I’m not on FB. Never have been.
There are a lot of queer run bookshops. I wonder were Avid lays?

Good for you. I don’t use fakebook, but do have an account to check up on the (adult) kids. From my perspective, it’s the most insidious propaganda platform imaginable. All “Social Media” has become totalitarian groupthink.
Being antisocial and anti-authoritarian by nature, I can’t imagine being a kid these days. Violence is inevitable given that (normal) people’s worldviews are being eliminated with extreme prejudice. The depths of hatred regularly espoused by “progressives” and the complete silencing of any opposition would make Goebbles jealous.

Second of all, "award-winning" needs to be taken in context. Liberals are famous for awarding each other make believe laurels. Just who "awards" anything to Richard Peck? Even the Pulitzer Prize is hardly worth a bucket of warm spit these days.
But it’s perfectly OK for them to tell us to shut up....
