In this particular case, it doesn't make any difference. My guess is that the sheriffs left their rifles in their car. The Sheriffs had pistols which is just as good as a rifle in a closed in environment such as a school. They would be engaging their targets within 100 feet, not 100 yards so it's a non issue.

That is a very important point! And it also destroys the liberal position that if there were no “assault rifles”, there’d be no more school shootings.
A school shooter with a semi-auto pistol could do just as much harm as one with a semi-auto rifle.
