"We have the world's largest, baddest army," said Major Troy Scott of the Army National Guard, while explaining how easily stereotypes against other nations' militaries can often arise. "But when you're building a coalition, you have to get past those obstacles." MAJ Scott's deployment to eastern Afghanistan in 2008- his first and for which he has received a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, and the Army Commendation Medal with Valor for his service- was spent in the company of those whom many back home may not have expected. Two thirds of the "Herculean" Task Force he commanded were members of the Polish military brigade - not American soldiers. MAJ Scott was assigned as Senior U.S. Advisor to the Polish Military Contingent in Afghanistan, operating as the Deputy Commander of the 1200 man Task Force White Eagle- predominately Poles- from March 2008 to October 2008. It was the only coalition battalion-size task force under the 4th Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division. On October 31, 2008 the Polish Military Contingent assumed responsibility of their own Brigade battle space, with MAJ Scott continuing on as advisor to the Polish brigade. Said MAJ Scott, "Sometimes U.S. Forces, we look at ourselves- and rightly so- as a superior force." But, he explained, to watch one of our NATO partners (particularly the Poles) operate in Afghanistan and exceed expectations proved to be a tremendously gratifying experience There has been a further impact to maintaining such a partnership as well. Keeping the Poles in Afghanistan allows the U.S. to keep 3 times the number of our soldiers out of Afghanistan. "The value is expediential- a combat multiplier," he said. It was MAJ Scott's job to ensure that the American expectations were understandable for the Poles, for whom English was not their second language, but their third. Scott, who had no previous experience with the Polish military or even the Polish language, observed the melding of two differing armies and cultures, fighting alongside one another for a shared goal in a foreign space. Learning the land and history of the region was key to both MAJ Scott and his Task Force. During his deployment, his brigade participated in the largest coalition movement of personnel in Afghanistan, moving battle spaces from the Paktika province to the Ghazni province. "You have to be a little bit politician, engineer, city planner, lawyer," described MAJ Scott. For his service and leadership, MAJ Scott has also been recommended for the Silver Star and Distinguished Service Cross. |
Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families. This is a politics-free zone! Thanks for helping us in our mission! |

Hey there, Kathy.
Our ‘net seems to have finally settled down after going in fits and starts all day. We’ll see what happens as the night wears on.
We’ll be fairly warm the next week though Tues. will be chilly. We look forward to rain tomorrow and I sure hope for a thunderstorm in the mix. :-)

Well bummer! Too bad that you have to bring stuff back. That has to be a LOT of salt to even make the air smell bad. I hope you do get rain.
Wish we would. I’m afraid we’re heading into another drought. The farmers around the area are worried, too.

He is the champ of relaxed! And he’s so loooooooooong! Hard to tell there, but he really stretches out and his tail is so long that I can touch the end of it without bending over when he has it straight up, which is how he usually carries it. LOL!

It was just one bag but it was full of paper that would have blown in the wind. I had to walk around a few times to stamp out a few glowing cinder-type pieces as it was. Cardboard really falls apart and blows when there’s wind.
No biggie. That stuff will get burned next time.
I think they put down the whole winter’s supply of brine last week. I’ve never seen so much salt on the roads after it dried. And the cars keep kicking up the salt dust. It’s on everything outside.
I had to wash my lips off and rinse my mouth out when I came in because I could taste it. Ugh!
I hope there isn’t another drought there this year. No, no, no, no, NO!

He certainly seems to have it down pat! LOL
Some of ours are pretty good at relaxing, especially in odd ways. Chauncey was one. I don't know how she thought this was comfortable but it was her favorite way to sleep.

That kitteh looks very similar to Tigermaus!
I can’t stay long, it’s really late.
My skilled unit is full, and the pace is crazy!
I have pulled two 12 hour shifts, I’m pooped!
LOL
One more shift to go..
Ice cream is helping my attitude immensely!

Howdy, MS.B!
Ice cream helps almost everything and is a really good attitude adjuster. LOL! Sounds like you’re working a lot of hours and that’ll sure make the attitude go south.
Chauncey looked a lot like a Maine Coon - - markings, white tip on the tail, the little tufts on the ears, etc. - but she was a small girlie. I miss her a lot. Kidney failure took her at a young age. :-(

I’m glad you were able to get all the little cinders stomped out. That could have been bad!
All that salt! If you have another snow event, you won’t need to put down more. There’s no way it’ll stay frozen on those roads! LOL!
I’d better go. Getting up early this morning has wiped me out for tonight! See ya tomorrow!

Go for the ice cream! ......and then get your rest, Sis!
That’s a lot of shifts. I don’t know how you do 12 hours at a time. I have a friend who does the same thing at a hospital here. She monitors the heart patients.
I guess you know we DO need another picture of Tigermaus! :)
I need to go, too. See ya next time. Maybe a bit earlier? Sweet dreams!

I remember that cartoon, though I haven’t thought about it in eons. Our whole family got a kick out of it because we had boneless cats. LOL
It WOULD be nice to be able to relax as much as they do.

It wasn’t that much trouble. Just keep an eye on them as they float and if they don’t go out quickly, walk over and step on them. There wouldn’t have been a problem if the wind hadn’t picked up.
The highway used to be black asphalt but it’s white with all the salt they put down. They over-did it. We need a HEAVY rainfall to get the roads clean. I’m still coughing and sneezing from being outside tonight.
Good night and sleep well. I hope things calm down there tomorrow.

Interesting. Polish troops working with American troops. Must make Vlady nervous as long history of animosity between the Russkies and the Pokes. The
Katyn Forrest Massacre has not been forgotten nor forgiven by the Poles.
