The NSA was formed in 1954. It wasn’t even acknowledged to exist during the 50-60s. That was the joke back then. “No Such Agency” Also “Never Say Anything”.

Most of the information on the NSA was released during the Sen. Frank Church committee hearings, where the democrats savaged our intelligence agencies, known and unknown.

The FISA act is based on the outcome of those hearings.

Officially, those of thus in the military could acknowledge the existence of the NSA in around 1982 or so. Anyone else know? Before that, it was classified and you would be court-martialed if you said its name.

And yup, I was in it, but NOT until 1991.
