Why climate change may be to blame for dangerous cold blanketing eastern U.S.

Biting Arctic air — bringing wind chills as low as 30 below — will make the outdoors miserable for more than 130 million Americans in the Northeast, as well as parts of the Southeast and Great Plains this weekend, forecasters warn.

But before folks file this cold snap away under "typical winter weather," scientists say the potentially record-breaking temperatures in store for Friday night through Sunday are being fed, at least in part, by a warming climate.

Confused?

A study published last year in the journal WIRES Climate Change, however, lays out how the warming Arctic and melting ice appear to be linked to cold weather being driven farther south.

"Very recent research does suggest that persistent winter cold spells (as well as the western drought, heatwaves, prolonged storminess) are related to rapid Arctic warming, which is, in turn, caused mainly by human-caused climate change," Jennifer Francis, a climate scientist at Rutgers University and one of the study's authors, said in an email.

"'Persistent' is the key word here, as overall we expect that record-breaking cold events will occur less often in the future but they will likely last longer," she wrote.

Normally, cold air already sits above the North Pole in a swirling area of low pressure known as the polar vortex, which itself is not caused by global warming or climate change, meteorologists say.

Colonial New England. Paul Revere and Sam Adams are gathered at a friend’s house enduring a blizzard.

“You know,” the friend says, “this blizzard, and last year’s hurricane? It’s all our fault. It’s global warming caused by man.”

Prehistoric times, Ugg and Groo are in a cave during a nasty blizzard.
“You know,” says one of their caveman friends, “this blizzard, last year’s mighty wind storm, glaciers melting—it all our fault. Man cause climate change.”

One has to be a special kind of stupid to double down when one is wrong.

It is climate change.
Not the man-made, CO2 algore climate change, but part of the natural cycles of climate.

Look up “Grand Solar Minimum” and “Little Ice Age.” We are leaving a warm climatic maximum and entering an era of declining solar output with increased cosmic rays. Look for fierce storms, wild buckling of the jet stream, increased earthquakes and volcanic activity (yeah, just think of several Mt St Helens going off at the same time).

Cooling climate is much more dangerous than a little global warming. Cooling will cause catastrophic crop failure and make extensive areas nearly uninhabitable.

Anthropogenic—”man caused” global warming—yes “climate change” may exist but we are tiny fleas—tiny microbes—on the planet as a whole.

Look out the window on a plane trip and see how huge this country, this world, is. How can we tiny specks be the cause of such change?

A liberal comedian put it well (and yes, despite being liberal): “Everyone’s saying save the planet, save the world. The planet will be fine. It’s just going through its Lose The Humans program.” (Caused by the world, not the people...)Or maybe he’s saying we are to blame...

Saw movie Downsizing (thankfully only paid $6 for it). Yeah, Matt Damon shrinks to 5 inches tall and so do a bunch of other people concerned about wasteful people. At first it seemed like a spoof of the whole climate change hysteria. They all wind up in a mini city, Leisureland, where there’s a huge dome and everything is set to their scale...

Then the film turns from a comedy to preaching global warming. ONE scientist predicts the release of methane from the one of the poles will kill off all human beings, he says. Based on that, many of the shrunken people decide to go into an underground utopia. Needless to say, this film—and the sequel to An Inconvenient Truth, which thankfully I did not see, both BOMBED at the box office.
(Friggin’ Jim Verniere of the Boston Herald gave Downsizing a B plus. Shoulda known, the moonbat...)

“uh.....because it is too dangerous to the liberal narrative to expose the tool they’ve invented to control population growth, industry, freedom, capitalism, etc.”

The interesting thing is, without a population in the billions we wouldn’t have many of the things we enjoy so cheaply. Cell phones, cheap as dirt TV’s, even wide availability of the things done by satellites. Oh, and money. Lots and lots of money. That huge population is the driver of our economies. Take away the half of people that liberals talk about, “wouldn’t it be nice if half the people died?” and suddenly the world would be a poorer place with less technology, fewer markets and, ironically, probably more starvation and misery.

As an aside, look at how disastrous the one child per family policy has been for China. It’s like universal sanitation, which gave us polio. Some things sound wonderful on the surface. But, once implemented, there turns out to be a dark side.

Imagine some huge global warming project, which not only impoverishes and starves the world, but goes into effect just as the planet enters another solar minimum and what would have been a mere 200 year cooling period. Well, imagine what the 200 years would turn into if that project “worked.”

Nothing in the world is linear. We simply can’t look at the situation as it is now and make an accurate projection of what it would be if we interfered. So, liberals saved the spotted owls by destroying the lumber industry. Now they are being wiped out by a different breed of owl. Nothing men do will come out as men think it will.

As a friend of mine is fond of saying, “Some things are so stupid, only a college professor would believe them.”

Okay, WE can't say that a record breaking cold snap is evidence AGAINST global warming, but THEY can say that this cold snap is evidence FOR global warming.

Sure.

Anyone remember the ‘global cooling’ from the ‘70s? Same crap sandwich, different wrapper.

yesterday: Cold Weather is not indicative of global warming..

Today: Cold weather is indicative of global warming...

Gee, they want to own both sides of the debate...how does that work exactly?

Back in Al Gore’s first award winning movie, he warned us what to do if the Earth ever started to act normal again. Deny that it’s normal!

The chart above shows a weakening trend of sunspots in solar cycles 22, 23 and 24. These are the latest in a sequence dating from 1755, when extensive recording of solar sunspot activity began. Note that the peak of solar cycle 24, which occurred in 2014, is only about half that of solar cycle 22, which peaked about 1989.

This portends global cooling—not global warming. Sunspots are dwindling to lows not seen in 200 years. In 2008, during the solar minimum of cycle 23, there were 266 days with no sunspots. This is considered a very deep solar minimum. You can check out pictures of sunspots—or their absence—day after day for recent years at http://tinyurl.com/6zck4x.

Was there any discussion of the cold spell being a harbinger of global cooling? Sun spot activity is at an unprecedented low. The primary actor in climate change is the Sun.

More likely than not, we are on the cusp of global cooling caused by the Sun, not you.

Liberals think that conservatives don’t believe that climate change exists. Nothing could be further from the truth. We just don’t believe that man is the root cause and we don’t believe redistribution of the wealth is the way to deal with it.
