It’s clear from reading these accounts that the entire Datto saga was an absolute comedy of errors, incompetence, and shenanigans on the part of Platte River Networks and Datto, Inc.
The Datto backups began in 2013, but apparently data from an old Clinton server was transferred to the new server and subsequently included in the backups. The missing Clinton emails from early 2009 were even possibly on the backup.
PRN didn’t realize that data was being backed up to the cloud in the Datto arrangement, even though the Clinton team specifically requested that no remote backups be made.
All 28 PRN employees therefore had continued access to all of the Clinton emails through an unsecured web portal into the cloud.
When PRN realized this, inept attempts were made to delete data from the cloud and to change retention policies to shorter periods, resulting in the now well-known “oh sh!t moment” of Combetta.
Whew, what a mess! I’m sure glad the FBI was right there on the case the whole time to get to the bottom of this farce! /s
