Retired military commanders urge Congress to address 'gun violence crisis'

Sixteen of the nation’s top retired military commanders are urging Congress to pass gun control legislation, arguing that there are many steps that can be taken to curb gun deaths that do not violate the Second Amendment.

In a letter they plan to send to Congressional leaders, the retired commanders, including Army Gens. Wesley Clark and Michael Hayden, Navy Admiral Eric Olson, Air Force Lt. Gen. Norman Seip and Marine Brig. Gen. Stephen Cheney, argue that Congress is “no longer speaking or voting for the majority of Americans, including gun owners” when it comes to the issue of firearms.

“There is no acceptable excuse for our elected leaders to avoid addressing this as a national crisis,” they write.

The group is part of the veterans coalition of a gun control group founded by former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly. They laid out their arguments in a letter they plan to send to Congressional leaders.

“The only gun legislation that should be considered is a repeal on the restrictions for silencers/suppressors, a repeal on the restrictions for short-barreled rifles/shotguns, nationwide concealed carry reciprocity, and other legislation that restores the Second Amendment to its original meaning. “Shall not be infringed” is the strongest protective phrase used in the Constitution, and it means exactly what it says.”

The purpose of the 2nd Amendment is to allow the people to defeat the government when it seeks to establish tyranny. Those conditions do not obtain.

Even if civilians were allowed automatic weapons, explosives, artillery, and tanks, the gov would still have absolute air superiority.

We had absolute air superiority over Vietnam, while Jane Fonda's allies had pajamas and AK-47s, Type 56 rifles/carbines, and better moral/motivation. Even a pistol or a single-shot rifle/shotgun makes a huge difference. The purpose of the Second Amendment still applies today, and even facing drones. Our rights to keep and bear arms are like the deadbolts on our doors - they don't make it impossible for bad people to impose on our lives, just difficult enough that it's not worth the effort . . . or the risk.

So long as the American people are well-armed, government thugs and totalitarians will hesitate to press their luck. They don't want to find out whether 0.1% or 3% of decent Americans will protect our rights, and they don't want to find out how effective that minority will be.

“We had absolute air superiority over Vietnam”

Which is one reason we won that war.

“while Jane Fonda’s allies had pajamas and AK-47s, Type 56 rifles/carbines, and better moral/motivation.”

Didn’t keep them from losing.

Fonda and her despicable ilk gave cover to Kennedy and the other traitors who reversed our victory and threw our allies to the murderers.

Ironically, We The People have a superior right to infantry weapons than a standing army (which the Founders warned against). Don’t we?

Whether or not we won the war in Vietnam, the communists took over and still control the country.

“Whether or not we won the war in Vietnam, the communists took over and still control the country.”

You can thank the Cape Cod Orca and other senate traitors for that. They were handed a victory, and intentionally threw it to the commies.
