My Worst Nightmare: the Koch Brothers Get Their Hands on Time Magazine
Huffington Post ^ | November 28, 2017 | by Charles Alexander, Former TIME Editor

Posted on 11/28/2017 6:41:10 AM PST by Oldeconomybuyer

Can you imagine what it would be like to see your life’s work suddenly go down the drain? I can - right now. As a former Time editor who spent 13 years editing the magazine’s coverage of environmental issues, I am in despair because Time Inc. is selling itself to Meredith Corp. in a deal that includes a $650 million investment from Charles and David Koch, whose Koch Industries is a big player in the oil and gas business and whose philanthropy has long funded climate-change denial. It is a tragic end to a Time story that was once glorious but turned sad as corporate woes increasingly affected the editorial product at one of America’s iconic news outlets. The story is not just about the fate of Time. The story is about the fate of the world.

For the moment, we will still have the harsh truth about climate change published in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone and The Nation. But the Internet is hurting those publications’ revenues as well, and what happens if they too get bought by the deep-pocketed titans of fossil fuel?

I still have faith that in the long ideological war over climate change, the truth will eventually prevail. The ravages of global warming will become too obvious to be denied, even by the likes of Trump. But by then the damage to the planet may be irreversible, and my beloved Time, once a soldier for truth, may be marching with the forces of greed and deception.

Time Magazine has been the Bible for Democrats and Leftists for nearly a century.

Go to a library and pull some back issues from the FDR era. You’ll see it’s the same sycophantic rag it is today.

That's the key to the global warming marxists. It's not about science, or polar bears, or hurricanes, or spotted owls. It's about the ideology of heavy-handed, big, global government.

That is actually pretty typical of their business model.

Before an out right buy, they “dip their toes in”. Sometimes, many times, that is all the further it goes. If they like it, they will buy in more. If they don’t they may just let the loan get paid off.

But there will be influence on how the business is run. I would expect a few Koch alumni to start filtering into Time along the way. Again, they have a pretty sound model that I have seen applied to very diverse and different companies. It will help Time, and it is not political.

Interesting article... mentions lots of ideology, but science is never actually mentioned.

“...In fact, any reputable climate scientist will tell you..”

This is the closest reference and it simply demeans any opposing scientific views.

Henry R Luce would almost certainly feel the same way about how you and your fellow LEFTists destroyed his Time-Life media enterprises!

Anybody who thinks the Kochs are Conservatives needs to check into a mental institution. I heard one of them say that they don’t much care for either Party, they are simply engaged because it helps their business interests. They are not a whole lot different than George Soros except that they aren’t Jewish.

Liberals can not compete in the marketplace of ideas. They must dictate and control the minds of the masses. Their views demand total, dictatorial control. It is not simply that they get to have free speech, or even own the majority of outlets for free speech. It is that there must not be free speech for anyone else. There’s no room for dissent. Completely absent from this equation is the idea that people could possibly think for themselves.

Liberals do not come to their views through logic, reason, or rational thought. They emote their way through life. Global warming MUST be true and scientific because they FEEL that it is so. To them science is just yet another tool to use in their quest to control people.

Liberals are anti-choice when it comes to schools and media options.

Liberals are anti-science when it comes to defining human life and biological sex.

stupid is as stupid does: the fools at huffpuff are overreacting. they should be celebrating the Koch brothers wasting two billion dollars on a failing, imploding print publishing “empire” that’s a mere skeleton of its former self.

The “flagship” publication, TIME Magazine, is a hollowed-out publication with both shrinking readership and shrinking page count. The brand itself is as worthless as LOOK Magazine, and any attempt to convert it to a “conservative” publication would have the same effect of trying to convert National Review to a Nuevo Workers Daily, namely utter disaster.

And the rest of the publications in the Time, Inc. stable are all pretty much in the same boat as Time Magazine.

Print publishing is dead and the only reason it’s still hanging on is that the 60-80 crowd that is still subscribing out of habit haven’t all died off yet. Anyone younger than 40 pretty much doesn’t read print at all for any reason.

And converting the brands from print to digital is nearly fruitless from a revenue standpoint since print ads bring in thousands per page, whereas digital ads brings in microcents per ad, assuming the ads aren’t behind a paywall to start with, in which case there’s no point in advertising at all.

If Meredith keeps Time and the Kochs keep their promise to stay on the sidelines, it would be theoretically possible for the magazine to publish an objective story about climate change.

For the first time ever.

As far as I know, conservative scientists are not denying Global Warming; they're just not sure how much of it is actually anthropogenic. It will actually be good if TIME is run by people who are not leftoid misanthropes.

Maybe Meredith, with the Koch brothers backing can make it something worth caring about again.

It'd be a dream come true if Koch brothers became 'hands on' owners of TIME. Of course editors and reporters have a long history of standing up to owners... Still, if anyone can turn TIME around it would be the Koch bothers. Hope they reject the quick sell/quick profit thing.

The Koch Brothers are down around number 60 or more in the list of biggest donors to political candidates. They aren’t even in the same league as the NEA, Steyer, Soros, etc.
