WASHINGTON Paul Manafort and his former business associate Rick Gates were told to surrender to federal authorities Monday morning, the first charges in a special counsel investigation, according to a person involved in the case.
The charges against Mr. Manafort, President Trumps former campaign chairman, and Mr. Gates, a business associate of Mr. Manafort, were not immediately clear but represent a significant escalation in a special counsel investigation that has cast a shadow over the presidents first year in office.
Mr. Gates is a longtime protégé and junior partner of Mr. Manafort. His name appears on documents linked to companies that Mr. Manaforts firm set up in Cyprus to receive payments from politicians and businesspeople in Eastern Europe, records reviewed by The New York Times show.
Mr. Manafort had been under investigation for violations of federal tax law, money laundering and whether he appropriately disclosed his foreign lobbying.
Attempts to reach Mr. Gates on Monday were not successful. A spokesman for Mr. Manafort did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Want to hear what Trey Gowdy says after the charges are established....because this may all come down to unmasking.
NYT can only speculate on the charges; perhaps it is about something else altogether (though I doubt it, given the indictment of his business associate, who they will coerce to testify against Manafort). If the charges are indeed about money laundering years ago, the defense should subpoena Mueller and all DoJ/FBI documents on the prior investigation, when Mueller concluded NOT to indict Manafort. Why didn’t Mueller charge him then? What’s different now? Oh...Manafort supported Trump...
Grand Juries hear no exculpatory evidence or counter-arguments. They are told by prosecutors that x is a violation; the jurors do as they are told.
“It means that Manafort has nothing on Trump worth trading.”
Exactly! Nothing more. Nothing less. This is not bad (or even) news at all. Mueller’s people have been broadcasting it for many weeks. Indeed, even the timing ... day before elections ... etc. But also ... If there was even a reasonable chance of Manafort trading anything, this indictment could and would have been put off. It’s coming now mostly as an act of desperation — Mueller having to follow through on the threat in order to maintain credibility, and doing this little bit to try to show other targets that he means business. It comes across, though, as pathetic and egregious.
Trump has been winning all along, but the momentum in his favor has recently accelerated markedly. If this gambit of Mueller’s does not work quickly in his favor — and it could backfire even within the next few days — look for him to resign by citing the conflict of interest that we have all known about all along.
Sean Hannity owns Mueller. Mueller is hearing footsteps. Why leak on Friday when the indictment is on Monday? To shut down the narrative on Fox News the weekend.
The charges have nothing to do with the 2016 election; we’ll outside the purpose of the investigation and further proof this is a witch hunt. After nearly a year if this is the best Mueller’s got, it is reason to fire him and shut it down.
Right nothing to do with the election. Mueller going over old news period.
Notice how the f*ckfaces at the NYT slant the writing to show Trump in a bad light:
“, President Trumps former campaign chairman, “
“ that has cast a shadow over the presidents first year in office”
At least the NYT admits that Trump fired him.
unless they’re trying to get him to turn on someone in the campaign, this is going down the ‘what did HRC know and when did she know it’ path ?
Though the charges have nothing to do with the 2016 elections, look for the talking points on ABCNNBCBS to be “What did Trump know and when did he know it?”, discussed for weeks, and speculative lies about it.
The heading could have correctly been written:
“Paul Manafort, Who Once RAISED MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR THE CLINTON FOUNDATION, Told to Surrender”.
The changes have nothing to do with the 2016 election AND Manafort was part of the Trump campaign for 99 DAYS from May 19 to Aug. 19.
If the NYT (and other MSM outlets) had any scruples, their headlines would read, “Manifort and Gates Indictments Have NOTHING to do with Trump!”.
That doesn't matter to Mueller as long as he can take down Trump.
That doesn't matter to the msm who can spin the headlines to take down Trump.
Could be but Mueller didn’t have to go so over the top with this.
