The Catalan Parliament has voted to declare independence from Spain, prompting the central government to impose direct rule just 40 minutes later. The motion was carried by 70 votes to 10, with two abstentions. But before the vote, opposition parties stormed out of parliament in protest - with pro-independence MPs draping their empty seats with Catalan flags. In response, the Spanish government in Madrid has invoked article 155 of the country's constitution, dismantling Catalonia's autonomy.

Merkel, Juncker and Tusk are working the phones, telling Spain they had better NOT screw up their fascist EU project.

Years ago I lived in Spain and at the time the Spanish people in general always struck me as a lot of bluster and hand waving but when a fist flew they were stunned and unprepared. They are demonstrative but not violent. So now the lines are drawn will this really come to blows? Would Spanish soldiers really be willing to fire on other Spaniards? Or will this all end up in a conference room? Interesting times.

Another thought: back when I lived there it was the Basque region that was hot about separation. Do they take this opportunity to revise that and declare themselves independent?

La Legion (Spanish Legion) has been bored.
Also the Guardia Civil.
They get some excitement now.

Hasn’t Catalonia had off and on separatist movement from Spain since there was a Spain? Don’t think this is really a modern event but a continuing saga with current events composing the latest chapter. Correct me if this is not accurate.

The silence by the E.U. is telling. Notice how they support the Palestinian State but when its their slaves .. err tax payers revolting - crush them.

E.U is a police state - Brexit was a break out.

The Spanish government can brush off a history book and read how the British Parliament reacted to the Boston Tea Party. Maybe they can close the port of Barcelona until the Catalans come to their senses.

Barcelona IS the Spanish economy. It's actually the 4th largest city economy in the EU.

And that's the problem, they're carrying the rest of the country and Madrid gets the fancy upgrades.
