I have wondered, watching the coverage, why police didn't lay down suppressive fire on those windows.

Every cop in America has an AR in their vehicle now - even my neighbor, and he's an ISD cop.

Blown out windows, muzzle flashes from them, somebody open up and keep him ducking while the SWAT guys go in.

This was more like Columbine than the UT Tower.

“I have wondered, watching the coverage, why police didn’t lay down suppressive fire on those windows.”

Las Vegas cops are not in the business of ham-handed military assaults on buildings housing thousand of paying tourists that are visiting their city.

At night, you can’t tell where one window ends and the next begins. Nor did they know which window to engage. Your recipe is not one for success.

As for suppressive fire..

1. Are you sure they would be aiming at the correct window?

2. People above and below that floor probably walked to their windows to see what was going on. Friendly fire casualties?

3. If they are not shooting at the right target, would he even notice suppressive fire?

32 floors up and surrounded by innocent people on all sides behind tinted windows. The odds of accidentally shooting a hotel guest in their own room goes way up. Without first clearing thehotel it wouldnt be ideal.

If he had continued firing though, it becomes an option

yeah... shooting 30 stories up at a hotel filled with innocent people... what could go wrong?

...

wth people? has everyones brain shut off? I must have read 100 times yesterday... how did the hotel not notice this guy taking all those guns up to his room !?!?!?

um... ever heard of luggage ?

too much second guessing from people who are obviously sleep deprived or something.

300-400 yards away.. with pistols... probably not the best odds

Oops... misread your post... sorry. Although most rifles are sighted in for 100 yards.. and they train at that range... would need to make haste towards the target... suppressive fire into glass windows where you can’t see the bacstop would prove problematic I would think... open to ideas

The shooter was like a member of the Taliban up on a hill blasting away at GI's in a valley down below. Except unlike the Taliban, the shooter potentially had human shields on every floor of the building and couldn't be taken out by airstrikes for fear of collateral damage. He's provided a very useful ploy for mass killers on one way missions. May he spend eternity being tortured in the manner of Greek legend.

I’m NOT a cop.

I have one!

I think the elevation prevented that. Shooting up like that is not something most folk do. I would imagine there would be quite a fair amount of collateral damage as they dialed in the target. Would you want to risk innocent lives in the rooms below and above where the shooter was?

You are certainly getting flack for that idea - not a lot of critical thinking going on in this thread. If it was deemed a tactical requirement or perhaps the only option at returning fire, the logical course would have been to quickly scale an adjacent building of comparable height to get as close on the same plane with the tango as possible. Matter of fact some LE tried to accomplish that during the UT tower siege in Austin, but nothing else approached the height of the tower at that time - they only got a slightly better vantage point to fire from to help keep the guy's head down but that was it.

It happened fast.
Spraying bullets up 32 stories at a huge building at night in a confusing situation would have been s poor choice
