Fox News host Shepard Smith said Wednesday that the network tried and failed to get a Republican on-air to defend President Trump's controversial comments on violence in Charlottesville, Va. over the weekend
"Our booking team and they're good reached out to Republicans of all stripes across the country today," Smith said on his show "Shepard Smith Reporting."
"Let's be honest, Republicans don't often really mind coming on Fox News Channel. We couldn't get anyone to come and defend him here because we thought, in balance, someone should do that," he continued.
Smith's comments followed an off-the-rails press conference by Trump on Tuesday, during which he reasserted claims that "both sides" were to blame for violence during a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va. Saturday that ultimately left one dead and at least 19 others injured.
You had a lot of people in that group that were there to innocently protest, and very legally protest," Trump said, referring to individuals protesting against the removal of a Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee statue in the town.
Not all of those people were white supremacists, by any stretch."

Because they’re more worried about getting re-elected than speaking truth.
This coming from a man who when a bus was blown up in Israel and killed many Jews he was more worried about the retribution against Palestine.
He worried some Palestinians would be hurt or killed. That was the day I quit watching him.
I know why they couldn’t find one...they did’nt even try to find any.
Here’s one, Shep you pos.
I saw Newt, too. Though the article didn’t say it, I presume Smith was talking about Congressional Republicans.
Sheepherder (and other things with them) Smith.
He was patently offensive in drooling over the opportunity pound on Trump. He never addressed whether any Republican on even the best of circumstances would want to go on his show and subject themselves to his homosexual agenda and irritating personality.
Where did he look, his local fag bars?
Shep is an hysterical, traitorous ninny.
“Oh, stop. Now you’re sounding like Don the Lemon and his lunacy. What’s WRONG with you? “
What are you, gay? What’s wrong with you giving support to an anti-American channel such as Fox???
Is that fruit still on TV?
The President is telling it like it is and is getting bashed by Leftwing homo Smith for it.
I think the entire party apparatus, from McConnell to Ryan to the donors think this is where they go for the kill shot. I speak metaphorically of course. And I don’t mean every single person. But soooo many of the Republican establishment hates Trump. I think they’re trying to pressure him to quit.
I hope he doesn’t. I hope he stays and fights.
What these Republican hacks don’t realize or are trying to delude themselves with is that “it won’t happen to us, we’re too well connected.”
Bull. The scavengers will smell blood and attack everything and everyone associated with the Republican party. Even Lindsey Graham. Even John McInsane.
Add to that the fact that Trump’s words were ACCURATE: both sides had bad people.
Better get it right, Republican clowns. Or you’re finished as a party.
Fake News bias... Shep presents as fact that Trump said something that was bad and needed defending.
Trump was 100% correct. No need to be defensive. None.
They coulda put out a notice on Free Republic!
Maybe there needs to be a march to support the President.
