Walmart is developing facial recognition technology so it can identify the shoppers who appear irritated or just generally unhappy, according to a Wall Street Journal report published Wednesday.

The corporation reportedly plans on using the biometric data that it collects to ensure that potential customers who are displeased at any given moment are thoroughly and quickly accommodated for....

The jokes about 75 checkout lanes and 2 cashiers still apply...cos they’re true.

But speaking of cameras and cistomer service, I once saw 2 college students videotaping each other in front of a Walmart. Totally innocent, just using the building as a backdrop.

Well, the manager and assistant manager were outside like a shot, asking the girls why they were taping and to stop it. Perfectly understandable ans predictable given company policy and their shaky PR track record, but I thought it was amusing to see what would earn extra special attention that quickly.

Me too. I can go years without setting foot in Wal-Mart.

I travel a lot and can pretty much get everything that I can from Walmart & Sam’s Club. The pricing is about the same (except on heavy shipping items like bottled water). I don’t pay for delivery or taxes.

I save to favorites all the items I buy regularly from Walmart or Sams so shopping for me is usually less than a few minutes.

I find it to be a good alternative to Jeff Bezos’ Amazon.

I am.....

Sometimes I wear my stetson. Old ladies just step aside.

People here fear Walmart because they think it is a social disease and someone will see them there.

Walmart is one of the very best corporations in the entire world. In retailing, there is no equal.

I believe that. I was buying a bottle of wine in Wal-Mart one time and the cashir wanted to see my ID. She said their “scan” suggested I be carded and I was in my mid 50’s.

At the time I was wearing sort of baggy clothes and my hair was kind of long.

Considering that you can get a 128 GB card smaller than your fingernail and a camera/microphone combo not much bigger, I expect people to start wearing cameras constantly just in case something interesting happens. Companies and cops will be unable to stop being videoed constantly just as we are unable to stop them. People won’t even have to reach for a phone, just look and record.

Dinner plates at the Deli go for $4 sometimes less & large dinner salads go for $4 as well. Outside of Walmart you pay twice that sum for the same stuff.

From 1984:

It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself--anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face (to look incredulous when a victory was announced, for example) was itself a punishable offence. There was even a word for it in Newspeak: FACECRIME, it was called.

I’ve ordered some electronics for the grandkids at Wal-Mart occasionally but I never buy food or clothes from there, and I can get same brand cleaning and bath supplies at the dollar store. Wal-Mart does have better priced crystal cat litter, but it’s not worth it to me to walk in that store just for that.

Oh this should go over well with the perpetually aggrieved class...

Whachu you mean, I look angry, oh wait, free stuff? Now I’m happy.
