Canadian Gov't Official Calls Abortion a 'Tool to End Poverty'

An official representing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau argued that abortion and contraception are a means to ending poverty.

Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau told CTVNews.ca in an interview Tuesday that the Canadian government rejected the protests of a group of Catholic bishops regarding their reproductive healthcare policies.

"This is only a tool to reduce poverty and inequality and to make an impact in terms of development and peace and security in the world."

Speaking to CTV at the Family Planning Summit in London, England, Bibeau also said that despite disagreement they still value the perspective of the Catholic Church on the matter.

"It's important to have the conversation with the religious leaders so we can understand each other," continued Bibeau.

"We have to have honest conversations with our religious leaders and I'm more than happy to have this discussion in Canada."

Bibeau was partly responding to concerns raised in a letter from the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, which criticized the government for its staunch pro-choice policies.

Authored by CCCB President Douglas Crosby, the letter was sent out in late June and took issue with how the administration was spending more on foreign funding of abortion than on famine relief.

"The idea that everyone can somehow just agree that abortion and contraception are universal human rights is neither convincing nor credible," wrote Crosby.

"Indeed, even here at home, where we live side by side with peoples of so many different backgrounds, moral and religious traditions, the belief that there is universal agreement on a single set of Canadian values is itself contrived."

A self-identified Catholic, Trudeau announced in March that he was pledging approximately $650 million to fund abortions overseas.

"For far too many women and girls, unsafe abortions and lack of choices in reproductive health mean that they are either at risk, and at risk of death, or simply cannot contribute or achieve their potential through education, through involvement in their community, through a broad range of opportunities," stated Trudeau, as reported by the CBC.

"It is important that as a world we recognize that empowering women, that respecting their rights, is fundamental to building a world in which everyone has a real and fair chance to succeed."

Population density doesn't mean anything, either positive or negative, in isolation from a hundred other factors. It certainly does not indicate poverty, misery, or even "overcrowding".

Consider pairs of countries with very similar densities in population per square mile:

• Haiti 1,075
• Netherlands 1,069

• Bermuda 3,310
• Bangladesh 2,928

• Guernsey (UK) 2,072
• Palestinian Territories 1,958

  Or, at the other extreme:

• Canada 8
• Botswana 8

Bottom line, "Population density" is a big boogeyman.

Without a consideration of many other elements of development, economics, and culture, "density" means far less than you think.

Getting married before having children and staying married is a better way to avoid poverty. Can’t governments incentivize this?

But please ditch the judgmental language. It's not "murder" to help an unwanted spouse to peacefully and quickly be released from an unsatisfactory marriage. It would be more appropriately termed Compassionate, Enlightened End-o'-Life Care ^TM.

Even if the spouse in question is 29 years old, healthy, and personally finds his/her own life adequately satisfactory already, thank-you, happy as a frisky fetus even, a couple extra-special ingredients slipped into the margarita could definitely be end-of-life.

At last, a final solution to an unhappy marriage situation! It would sure beat divorce, in terms of "closure".

Yeah, we eliminated 60 million poor little whatzits in this country alone, and look, poverty marches on! WTFlippinHeck?

Not enough abortions, evidently. Maybe we need to get busy and multiply that by 2 or 5 or 10, hey? Maybe off the Moms, too: get this problem at the source!

Yes, no matter their mother's financial situations, they were all "poor", those unborn, never-born babies. You can't be poorer than dead.

Although I grew up in India and lived there until age 20, I hate going back there to visit because of crowds everywhere. Long lines everywhere. To buy airline ticket, to buy train ticket (main mode of travel in India), to buy a movie ticket, to get a table in a restaurant, to get cash from a bank, on and on and on, crazy long lines everywhere.

I used to love to visit Mumbai in my teen years. The last time I visited Mumbai in 1984, the sidewalks were do crowded in downtown Mumbai, it was shoulder to shoulder.

Wait until USA has 4000 Million people, then it will be just as overcrowded as India.
