Any time a cop passed her on the road, she began shaking. When police set up checkpoints in her neighborhood, her phone buzzed with warning text messages.
She worried about getting carded at bars. Boarding planes. Attending college. Anything that required an ID, which she didnt have because she was in the country illegally.
For a decade, Paula Flores Colorado felt crippled by a gnawing fear that eventually became unbearable.
To find peace, she returned to Mexico in 2009.
Some of President Trumps immigration advisors during and after his campaign, including Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach and now-Atty. Gen. Jeff Sessions, called publicly for immigration enforcement strategies so tough that they encourage those in the country illegally to self-deport.
The idea of spurring immigrants to leave on their own volition by making life uncomfortable for them dates to at least the 1990s, when conservatives waged a bitter anti-illegal immigration campaign. The effort climaxed in 1994 when California voters approved Proposition 187, which aimed to deny services to those in the country illegally.
Courts struck down most of the measures provisions, and the notion of self-deportation quietly died away. It arose again in 2012, when Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney floated the idea when asked about illegal immigration.
The answer is self-deportation, Romney said. Which is people decide they can do better by going home because they can't find work here, because they don't have legal documentation to allow them to work here.

Wouldn’t grieta work better than partio?
“Anything that required an ID, which she didnt have because she was in the country illegally.”
And that’s why the Democrats oppose voter ID laws as supposedly impacting the supposed “poor”.
Voter ID laws would catch many of these illegals voting.
They are the “poor” that the Democrats are so concerned with voting.
¡Adiós! Y no dejes que la puerta te golpee donde el buen Señor te parta.
I’ve known a (marxist) illegal alien who claimed to vote. At least he didn’t demand the ballot be in his native language (gaelic).
Canada pays illegals to voluntarily return home. If we did that they would just hop back in to get paid again. Once the wall is built we need to do what Canada does, free airfare home and $2,000 to leave.
I wonder how many business models are based on such government largess.
We need to do everything we can to make it IMPOSSIBLE to be an illegal alien in the USA.
Other countries do it, we should too.
First thing we need to do is remove all elected officials that hold out amnesty as an enticement.
Alexander, Corker, Flake, Graham, Hatch, Heller, Hoeven, Murkowsky, McCain, Rubio, Burr, Tillis, Portman, McConnell, Thune, Cornyn, Cochran, Isackson, Blunt, Johnson, Gardner, Toomey, Capito, Fischer, Collins, Wicker, Sasse are all Cheap Labor Express Republicans.
One down, several million to go . . .
My daughter was an inspector at San Ysidro in 1999 and darned few snuck past her !!!!
Yikes.
If latimes thinks I’m going to feel guilty over this woman’s anxiety about her crime, they’re dead wrong. This story makes me smile, even giggle a little.
Who “trapped” her, exactly?........
I saw self deportation happen a few times.
But once illegals figured out that Bush Republicans and Clinton/Obama Democrats were on their side and not on the side of Americans they flooded in in even bigger numbers, guessing correctly that treasonous Dubya and Obama would try to reward them with another amnesty.
During the 2003 Iraq war he only trusted Al Jazeera for news.
Adios cabrona!
Si amigo! Yo dice “Adios cabrona!’’
To my surprise, it’s a more or less rational story about a rational person.
I wish more illegals would follow her example.
We need a national policy that illegals get NO benefits of any kind, and take away the courts’ ability to rule on it.
We need to up the penalty for hiring illegals to include jail time.
