When people you know well, admire, and who share your values do something you strongly oppose, you have two options: 1) Cease admiring them or 2) try to understand them and change their minds.
In the case of my conservative friends who still snipe (or worse) at President Trump, I have rejected option one. The reason -- beside the fact that I simply like many of them -- is what I refer to as "moral bank accounts."
Every time we do good, we make a deposit into our moral bank account. And every time we do something bad, we make a withdrawal. These conservatives have made so many deposits into their moral bank accounts that, in my view, their accounts all remain firmly in the black....

You're scaring me. I'm serious.
He was very popular. Ft McClellan, AL was named in his honor.
My theory is if the Confederate Army could have held off the Union at Atlanta and stopped them there then McClellan would have won the 1864 election.
“Republican Women” were outraged over Trump’s “locker room talk”, (the Billy Bush recording,) during the campaign and far too many of them were prepared to sacrifice the future of the republic to maintain their rare air of moral detachment and superiority. The “octopus” allegations would have certainly ended Trump’s campaign were they not so easily debunked.
As a former enthusiastic Cruz supporter, I understand the pressure that was put on us to “get on the Trump train.” The primary was over and the question decided. But now that same sort of pressure must be put on these “Republican Women” (and their lapdogs.)
Even on this thread, the hostility against Cruz supporters continues. though they are not a threat and ought to be welcomed as allies in the fight. Ah but they can be vilified in Cruz’ name. How do you identify and vilify these types of “Republican Women?” As soon as I am finished typing, someone is going to come on with a comment about not all Republican Women...blah...blah.
Back in October, I am still solidly behind Mr. Trump, said Minnesota state Sen. Carrie L. Rudd, a Republican. Why are we even talking about locker-room comments from 11 years ago when there are so many important issues at hand? The people who supported Trump still do. (Washington Times 9 Oct 2016) Why were we talking about it, Sen Rudd? Because of “Republican Women” who are working for the enemy and are ready to sacrifice this great republic, as long as they can feel that they are untainted and pure in their moral transcendence.
Lincoln was told that General Grant was drunk in his tent during a major battle. Lincoln’s response was, “Find out what he’s drinking and send a case of it to every general in the army!”
Marse Lee was no #NeverGeorger!
The soldiers that stayed, stayed for their brothers.
John 15:13-14
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
“They need to admit they were wrong.”
Yes, that’s the crux of it.
At one point, Dennis gives himself away when he says [paraphrasing] “...the charge that Trump is not a conservative... is no longer relevant and no longer true”
No longer true? Wrong Dennis, it isn’t that it is no longer true, it’s that it wasn’t true in the first place. You just didn’t see it - it was there in his campaign rallies, it was there in the policy statements, it was there in his choice of allies. You just missed it.
More than anything else, it was Trump’s talk of the 35% import tariffs that got conservatives on their high horses. In truth, it is a matter of gospel in conservative economic doctrine that import tariffs are bad - they punish only American consumers by raising prices. It was conservative heresy for Trump to say otherwise.
What ivory tower economic conservatives missed, and what Trump the conservative got right, was that taking such a purist free trade position is idealism - no different than passivists pointing out that war is a bad thing.
In fact, if you apply Reagan’s peace through strength doctrine to trade, you arrive at something a lot like Trumpism - free trade must be mutual - if trading partners are using currency manipulation and protective tariffs against you, you have to reciprocate - even if the goal is to carrot and stick your way back to mutual free trade.
That single issue got conservative purists (economic pacifists) off on the wrong foot with Trump and they have never owned up to their mistake.
At best, he was a barely competent tactical field commander .
Well, you nailed it.
I visited Malvern Hill in Feb, where after mauling Lee for the 7th day in a row, McClellan snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. But he loved winning.
Thank you for sharing your concerns.
Or cluck about how Repubs and RATs aren't civil anymore...and blame Trump's "tone."
Troll somewhere else, please.
I also would prefer an opponent who did not want to fight me and who attributed to me nearly mystical powers, including the multiplication of troops.
Each year the U.S.A spends trillions of dollars having that hose wrestled away is not going to be easy. It must be done. Go Trump Go.
I don't know about you but each day that goes on I am
Man its time to smile, all this ginned up media masturbation aint going anywhere and probably will end up helping president Trump, summer is coming and its morning in America.
P.S - Remember the first thing the clintons did was get the FBI files, over the years Comey moves up becomes director, they use this information to establish the pipeline and file up the swap. John Roberts rules oddly. Now that Comey is gone can we expect to see a more "conservative" Justice Roberts. He'd better hope so. These rulings could bring new definition to unhinged for lefties
As for Cruz supporters, I'm fine with them...as long as they're willing to be Trump supporters.
But I remember those who took supporting Cruz as a license to bash Trump...and I don't forget.
Very well stated.
Every last Republican woman I know understood the consequences and never bought the idea the Billy Bush tape disqualified Trump.
My SIL actually said, "sheesh, he was just telling the truth about a certain kind of woman, get over it!" My only argument about the Bush tape was with a man. It was pretty contentious, and it was about how we couldn't vote for Trump because of the Bush tape.
He won in spite of that tape, he overcame it because he was srong enough to do so. White Republican women voted overwhelmingly for Trump, tis a fact.
Because they are still pouting their perfect did not win the Primary.
These morons are so poetically stupid they really imagine they can still “get Trump” without destroying themselves in the process.
“Movement Conservatives” are the most politically stupid people on the face of the earth.
There’s some truth to that...
