Texas Governor Abbott To Sign Legislation That Can Put Sheriffs of 'Sanctuary Cities' In Jail

Texas Governor, Greg Abbott just called into the Steve Malzberg show to discuss sanctuary cities plaguing certain counties in his great state. He said he would sign legislation that could put Sheriffs of sanctuary cities in jail.

Here we go, folks! Don’t mess with Texas!

“ Steve Malzberg: “I know you brought up the possibility of jailing such Sheriffs recently.”

Greg Abbott: “We have. It’s a two-step process. One, as Governor I could unilaterally use my office to take funds away from Travis County that had been previously granted to them under Governor’s grants for criminal justice reasons and we have defunded them to the tune of $1.5 million.

In addition to that, we have been pushing a piece of legislation in Texas that is going to pass that I will be signing into law that imposes even sterner penalties on counties. Uh it will include things such as further defunding them and it could impose jail time for the Sheriffs to enforce the laws.

Oddly enough these Sheriffs could wind up behind the very bars they are releasing these very criminals from.”

SANCTUARY CITIES ARE A VIOLATION OF EXISTING FEDERAL LAW

The 1996 immigration law ("Illegal Immigration Reform Act of 1996") specifically requires local officials and governments to fully cooperate with the federal government on issues regarding illegal aliens.

A state or local government entity or official may not prohibit, or in any way restrict, any government entity or official from sending to, or receiving from, the Immigration and Naturalization Service information regarding the citizenship or immigration status, lawful or unlawful, of any individual.”

Title VIII, U.S. Code section 1373.

Failure or refusal of local governments and officials to cooperate fully is a violation of the law.

AND - If a local official violates the law and that violation results in a death the official can be prosecuted and receive up to a LIFE SENTENCE in prison.

As in the case of Kate Steinle who was murdered in cold blood by an illagal alien being harbored by the city government in San Francisco.

It is time for the US Attorney General to bring charges against local officials who are violating this law.

BONUS FACT! This Act was signed into law by Bill Clinton.

1.5 million is nothing. As we can clearly see, it makes no difference to the Travis County Sheriff.

Lock her up.

However long is necessary for her to change her song & dance.

Time for talk is long past due Gov. Abbott.

Some sheriffs are obligated to follow the direction provided by political leaders. That is who should be going to jail. Sheriffs, too, if the policy comes from them, or they violate state law by releasing illegals.

Sheriff is elected. Lock her up along with the Mayor of Austin and/or the City Council.

Good. This is probably fantasyland, but would be great if the local police in these jurisdictions would stage a general walk-out for a day or two. See how the leftist mayors like that.

Excellent idea. They are supposed to protect citizens. Let’s get this ball rolling now.

I have long advocated making judges and lawyers serve the time they let criminals skate off without serving. if a judge or lawyers believes so strongly that a criminal is innocent, then if he is proven guilty by a different court, then let the judge and the guy’s lawyers do his time.

Abbott is clearly talking about the sheriff of Austin here. She is ignoring federal law and thinks she will get away with. If she can ignore immigration laws she can ignore other laws as well.

In fact, she thinks she is above law.

LOCK HER UP!

"Lock her up along with the Mayor of Austin and/or the City Council."

In the case of Austin you should include the mayor and city council members for at least the past two decades.

“Some sheriffs are obligated to follow the direction provided by political leaders.”

Actually, it doesn’t, as a matter of law, matter if a sheriff is elected or appointed, because they are still sworn to uphold all laws within their jurisdictions. But I agree that to the extent that any associated political entities/people are involved, they should be prosecuted right along with the sheriffs or police chiefs.

Yes this insanity won’t stop until some high profile agitators are perp walked. Let Rahm, Gavin Newsome or Comrade DeBlasio get fingerprinted and people will know how serious we are about stopping the flow of illegals. Otherwise the left will continue to flip the bird to the law.

This is how it should be done. They should arrest the lawless mayors as well.

Why a new law when existing law will suffice. We need Federal Marshals to perp walk a few of these boneheads.

I heard Rush read the law on air yesterday that says that if an illegal is released and later commits murder, the politician that released him is liable for a felony and something like 15 years in jail. Why that has not been used on Newsome, after the Steinle murder, is beyond me.
