If there's any truth to it, Watergate would be a better analogy. Or some of the antics attributed to J. Edgar Hoover.

There are better analogies, but calling liberals McCarthyists will bug them more :-) McCarthy was generally right, though, so point taken. Watergate would be a better analogy, yes. Hoover got smeared a lot after he died. The closest analogy I can think of is LBJ’s wiretaps on Nixon during the 1968 campaign.
