My alma mater, Yale University, embroiled in the latest PC controversy about the renaming of one of its dormitories, or residential colleges, named after John C. Calhoun, has announced a process under which students may petition to have the name of Calhoun College (or any other residential college) changed. One wonders however, if this will only be the beginning, rather than the end, because Yale itself is also named for someone connected to the slave trade, Elihu Yale.
This is hardly a new development, politically speaking, for Yale. In my day there were fliers in big 50 point font screaming "LESBIAN IS LUSCIOUS!" posted in Yale Station; Morse College hosted a huge sculpture of a giant lipstick on a tank, the statue of Nathan Hale was regularly defaced on the Old Campus, an oval pool that dripped water seasonally called the "Women's Table" was put in front of Sterling Memorial Library; and people wore pink triangle buttons and even giant pink triangle sweaters as a fashion statement. Viewed in this light, the Calhoun controversy is only the latest iteration of the restless urge to find wounds on the basis of race, sex, and class.
First the Calhoun controversy. I never thought much about the name when I attended; but now with a groundswell arising to change it, I have to wonder why it was named for him in the first place. Most people generally know that Calhoun was a pro-South, pro-slavery advocate, but did you also know Calhoun was secretary of war under President Monroe? Did you know that he was a Vice-President of the United States not just for one term, but two?

Mohammed University, since he never practiced slavery. What, he did? Well he probably would’ve voted for obama, so that’s okay.
John Harvard died in his early thirties, of consumption. Perhaps “they” can make a case that he was swapping spit with the wrong types?
When Yale snagged that Taliban "student", Dartmouth grad Laura Ingraham had a guy on that explained that since "State" didn't recognized the Taliban, it wasn't put on the "undesirables" list for visas.
Time to rewind an old campaign slogan from 1960, Kennedy vs Nixon. Let us now start accusing the LEFT of opening the "SATIRE GAP"!
I am pleased to see that that gentleman, that long ago, maintained the convention that I ascribe to this day, that these fanatics are NOT LIBERALS but LEFTISTS. Liberalism means open of mind, those of the LEFT lack that ability!
Founded in 1832, not 1932.
Calhoun just wasn't a Connecticut or East Coast guy. It would be different if we were talking about something in South Carolina.
It might also be different if Yale's residential colleges had an illustrious history, but they only go back to the 1930s -- within the living memory of some people still alive.
If the university is embarrassed by their own name, they could just say that from now on they are going to be named after Linus Yale (of the lock-making family) or Frankie Yale (Al Capone's mentor).
