But Trump is a shrewd administrator. I doubt that this is just a trial balloon. Trump is also completely guileless and cannot carry a grudge as far as the end of the driveway. There is no way he is manipulating Romney into some kind of humiliation. So, what is the president-elect thinking?
I keep wondering what Romney might be like in dealing with Germany, Sweden, and other “socialist allies”. I have to admit that he would do a good job with them and lead them to the same kind of resigned accommodation to Trump that he has himself adopted.
He represents a significant constituency all over the country, and this might get those people into the program.
He would be out of the country most of the time, and he would conscientiously implement Trump's policies. He is nothing if not a loyal employee, and anyway Trump will have no problem managing him.
He was almost president you know, and when he sits down with Putin, or Kim Jong, or the Ayatollah they will treat him with deference and understand that he is speaking for our whole country. They did so with Hillary, because they thought that she was going to be president. Anybody that I would approve of is not going to be respected on the world stage. Furthermore, Romney is better in every way than almost every head of state in Europe or Asia.
When Honest Abe took office, he filled his government with people who had fought the hardest against him, not for the reason you think, but because he had a war on his hands and he needed fighters who would fight. If Trump does the same, I am good with it.
“Trump is also completely guileless and cannot carry a grudge as far as the end of the driveway.”
I 100% completely disagree with this statement in every way.
You will learn over the next 4 years how wrong you are in this statement.
Very illuminating post—I appreciate your take on this odd turnover events.
.... he had a war on his hands and he needed fighters who would fight.

Romney couldn’t stand up to Candy Crowley so to me, he’s not a fighter nor did he prove to be one in the latter weeks of that campaign. The disappointment of Mr. Milquetoast in that debate/campaign is still a bitter pill with me. That being said, if Trump chooses him, I won’t like it at all, but I’m willing to give Trump the benefit of the doubt. He’s outwitted and outplayed everyone (media, politicians, etc.) over the last year and a half so he’s earned my support and patience as he works his plan to MAGA.
