If he was on the platform waiting for the train, how do they know he was a straphanger rather than a seatsitter? "Straphanger" is New Yorkese for someone who takes public transportation.

My old boss (40 years ago) in the military defined straphangers as basically the military version of an ass-kisser/brown-noser.
