NeverTrumpers Eat Humble Pie

“I’ll call Donald Trump to offer my support,” enthused former NeverTrumper Glenn Beck after readjusting his universe to the presence of the new president-elect. Was this reassuring to the Trump team? Had an entire constituency come home?

Perhaps not. Beck may have squandered his political capital long before he joined the NeverTrumpers and established a micro-niche in cyberspace. First there was the late afternoon talk show on Fox News where Beck routinely dabbled in political history and had an hour of major network time to chew on his assorted obsessions while challenging his audience to make some sense of it. He carried his sophomoric approach to radio where he and a pack of wisecracking pals would do their best interpretation of frat house conversation. So I’m sure Trump is saying, “Thank you. We’ll be in touch.”

But others are coming home – with a varying degree of enthusiasm.

Only man on that list that disappoints me is Thomas Sowell. He's the only real intellectual. The rest are GOP hacks and single issue (war) obsessives.

I remember near a couple of years ago he severely pissed me off with two or three of his articles (basically, arguments for voting the establishment candidate). I stopped trusting what he says then. This Against Trump issue just confirmed my decision.

It’s really painful to see Mona Charen and Thomas Sowell on that list. I have deep respect for them both.

I sometimes think there was a divine hand in this election. Mark Levin constantly complained that we got the most disliked candidate pitted against the worst candidate the Democrats could produce. I now see it a different way. It was a golden opportunity to put in a radical proven fighter against an elite rigged machine . As close as this election turned out we got the very best outcome given the possible inputs.

Whatever the respect is for, they clearly are not familiar with or acquainted to drive-by America and what’s been happening to real-live people out here.

You can’t think big “Ivory Tower” thoughts and have them mean anything if you have no real experience with the subject matter (people) that mattered the most.

Sowell has been a conservative think tank fixture for so long he's gone establishment on us. I have to remind myself that his best work is forty years old.
