A Los Angeles County sheriffs sergeant died Wednesday after he was shot while responding to a call of a residential burglary in Lancaster, authorities said.
The sergeant killed was Steve Owen, a 29-year department veteran, according to sheriffs Executive Officer Neal Tyler.
This has been a very dark day for the Sheriffs Department, Capt. Steve Katz said. We are all suffering right now.

The shooting occurred as Owen and his partner responded to a 911 call about 12:35 p.m. from a woman reporting a burglary in progress at an apartment building in the 3200 block of West Avenue J-7, authorities said at a news conference.

And there is a ballot initiative to get rid of the death penalty for murder in California.

You need to get control of yourself. We are a nation of laws, that’s what separates us from the vermin.

A 29 year veteran! He couldn't have had more than a few months to go until retirement.
Too bad the juicebrains running California have all but eliminated the death penalty.
Hanging's too good.

Just an average day. The officer got up, went to work and did what he’s been doing for 29 years.
You never know which day will be your last, from your first day until you retire.
Within the next week or so, someone on the forum will be glad to tell us there isn’t one decent cop in the nation.
Tell that to this man’s family.
He was trying to get this guy into custody to protect all the people in the area, and there was clearly a need to do that.
