CLEVELAND, Ohio Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams dispelled rumors that officers seen on bicycles Sunday at an anti-Trump protest were in what some called "riot gear."
The chief said during a Monday morning press update that the officers were in padded Motocross bike-style gear. They had been using the gear on a different detail and were called in to help out with the protest.
Williams added that Cleveland police don't use the term riot gear. They wear a form protective gear when needed for crowd control but it is different from what the officers had on Sunday.
"Just to be clear, there is no such thing as riot gear. The city of Cleveland does not have riot gear," Williams said.
The padded gear worn by bicycle officers was purchased in preparation for the Republican National Convention. The city sought to purchase 310 sets of long-sleeve jackets, gloves and shin guards.
The city also bought gear for use for crowd control.
Cleveland is seeking to buy 2,000 sets of riot gear, including riot-control suits and collapsible batons, the city's latest step to spend a $50 million federal security grant for July's Republican National Convention.
Williams said the "personal protective equipment" is meant to be a defensive tool, not an offensive tool against demonstrators.
In March, the city of Cleveland sought to purchase 2,000 sets of riot-control suits and batons with part of the $50 million federal security grant used to prepare for the RNC.
If there isn’t the Cheif should be relieved of command for incompetence.
L
So is he also saying that Trump supporters will be left the mob as happened in California?
I don’t understand your post?
If they have no riot gear, they’re probably going to be told to stand down. Or at least, I worry that is the subtle message here.
OK it reads like Trump supporters are “leaving the mob” which threw me off.
Sorry.
Actually, this term ‘riot-gear’ didn’t really get started until the late 1960s in LA. All it is though....is just pads like some NFL team would use. The helmets have gone up a notch every ten years and probably more protective.
It’s like the word assault-rifle. What does that really mean? The model 1873 Winchester could be classified as an assault rifle. Or go and suggest to some idiot journalist that there is a problem with assault-shotguns.
This chief just admitted he is a PC bleeding heart lib/DEM.
Yes, he isn’t saying they won’t be armored. Just that it isn’t “riot gear”.
CPD will also not be breaking skulls with “night-sticks” or “billy-clubs”
Not a smart move dumbass. This is not going to end well.
Riot gear, shmiot gear...it’s just ‘padding’. Oh, and tactical nukes.
Chief Williams: “The city of Cleveland does not have riot gear.”
Well, Chief, if BLM and all of the other Soros-funded groups have their way, you and your officers may come to wish that you did.
I think the word “to” was omitted. As in “left to the mob”.
That makes sense...and completely changes the meaning.
Thanks
... Why Cleveland anyway, RNC? Was Detroit all booked up?
Even if OHIO is important to the vote mix, why Cleveland?
“So is he also saying that Trump supporters will be left the mob as happened in California?”
When asked that, he said no, Cleveland police take action.
“Yes, he isnt saying they wont be armored. Just that it isnt riot gear.”
The official title is “personal protection equipment”.
The Republican National Convention should NEVER EVER be held in a Democrat controlled city, ever again. It is like having a prayer meeting in Hell, it looks good but the outcome is not positive.
