Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) is doubling down on his push for a special counsel to investigate Hillary Clinton's email practices while secretary of State in the wake of a top watchdog report.
"I just have to say the conduct of the former secretary demonstrates why people just don't trust her," the Senate's No. 2 Republican said Thursday. "Her intention has been to obstruct the public's right to know."
Cornyn's comments come after the State Department inspector general said that Clinton took steps to make sure her personal email account wasn't "accessible" while she was secretary of State.
Cornyn said the report proves an independent counsel is needed.
"I've called for the appointment of a special counsel, because it's clear that the attorney general who serves at the pleasure of the President Obama is going to have very little incentive or intention to pursue the appropriate investigation," he said.
Cornyn has repeatedly accused President Obama and White House officials of trying to influence the FBI and Department of Justice by making public comments on Clinton's use of a private email server.
The 83-page inspector general report released Wednesday provides fresh ammunition for Clinton critics on the scandal, which has dogged her campaign.
Cornyn said the report "makes clear" that Clinton and her staff wouldn't be interviewed by State Department investigators.
"To say that she's cooperating with an investigation by the inspector general of the State Department and then refusing to be interviewed is just well, let's call it what it is. It's a lie," he added.
According to the report, five of 26 aides responded to questionnaires from the inspector general's office. Clinton also declined to be interviewed.
Too late for that. She’ll be president before they even get started collecting evidence.
The perfect means for kicking the can down the road until after November, when if Trump wins it won't matter because she'll be prosecuted anyway, and if Hillary wins it won't matter because she'll skate. Don't you just love politicians with non-solution solutions?
Like Kenneth Starr?
F O R G E T - I T !
Obama can't have a Clinton Foundation and an Obama Foundation active at the same time. The bribery scheme can't work that way.
I can tell when someone is pi$$ing on my foot. It gets wet.
Obviously he believes us to be morons. And he’s probably not far wrong for much of the population.
Richard Milhous Nixon only had 18 missing minutes.
Cankles has 18,000 missing emails.
Yep, we can bet the farm she or at least her attorneys are fully aware of all of that.
She’s been investigated up the wazoo. After the FBI is done there is no need for more investigation.
But she does need to be prosecuted. If congress could appoint an independent prosecutor, that would be great.
This is Cornyn's specialty. It's why he's in Leadership.
The rhetoric has changed not only at FR but also in the media. We’re seeing more negative articles from the media and more consensus here that Hillary is damaged and ultimately doomed to drop out of the race.
The agreement between Trump and Sanders to debate before the Kalifornia primary is telling.
The old political rules are changing fast. Someone new and who is for our country has stepped in the fray. Hillary will never be president! Ever!!
Too late. She’s already gotten a free pass on it. The public is too stupid to know what it’s about.
Cornyn’s an idiot.
He can order the FBI director to the Hill, put him under oath and demand a detailed status on the investigation, including the extent to which political pressure is being brought to bear. It might have to be done behind closed doors, but it can be done.
I actually trust Director Comey, given the fight he’s picked with his own Administration I’ve the Fergusson Effect.
Way too late for this. There should have been a Special Prosecutor appointed the day after it was revealed Clinton was running a home brew server.
The Clintons run out the clock better than any professional sports team. They are already slow-walking this scandal, knowing full well the timeline of the election cycle.
They have to occasionally put out these headlines. Make it seem to the so-easily-swayed that they are on the right side of this
I don’t think so. I think she’s in the race right now to buy time to hand the nomination to Biden, at a time when Sanders will have a harder time contesting for it, in exchange for a 1/20/2017 morning pardon.
Ohhhhh Noooooo! Not a ‘special council’!!!
It’s really gotten past the point of being insulting, that the GOP thinks we still believe their crap. They ought to just be done with it and come out and say “For the betterment of (our vision for) America, we’ve decided to bury the hatchet with our fellow democrats, and are pleased to announce the formation of the Uniparty!” Yay! Yay! Yay! “No more fighting with our fellow politicians!” Yay! Yay! Yay!
