You are absolutely correct. We cannot afford to make assumptions that may never come to pass: “Hillary will drop out of the race due to health reasons”, “Hillary will be indicted and forced to drop out of the race”, etc. The polls will change back and forth, and we cannot arbitrarily dismiss polls showing Trump a few points behind as a biased poll, and therefor meaningless. We have to proceed on the assumption that we will have to fight for every single vote right up until the last polling place closes on election night. To get complacent and do otherwise is just too risky.
