Trump shores up Republican unity as he takes on Clinton
Yahoo News ^ | May 5, 2016 | Michael Mathis

Billionaire Donald Trump set about unifying a fractured Republican party Thursday, fortified by the support of a key party leader as he launches into battle for the White House against likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Late Wednesday the top Republican in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, publicly endorsed Trump's candidacy "to prevent what would be a third term of Barack Obama."

"As the presumptive nominee, he now has the opportunity and the obligation to unite our party around our goals,” McConnell said in a statement.

Trump's commanding victory in Indiana's primary Tuesday pushed remaining challengers Ted Cruz and then Ohio Governor Kasich out of the race, leaving the real estate tycoon an uncontested path to the nomination.

Their capitulations brought the curtain down on one of the most contentious and chaotic nomination battles in generations, in which Trump pummelled no fewer than 16 rivals into submission.

"Now we'll unify the party," Trump, 69, told Fox News on Wednesday. "We're going to get people together."...

...."I know people aren't sure right now what a President Trump will be like," he told The NYT.

"But things will be fine. I'm not running for president to make things unstable for the country."

From the article:

"I believe Donald Trump will ultimately get chosen," Republican National Committee chief Reince Priebus said in an extraordinary embrace of a candidate the establishment had fought tooth and nail to stop.

"We need to get behind the Republican nominee."

Or end up with BHO III!

Best Chance you had in Years

Those who feel the need to claim they can't vote for Trump

Sorry the days of picking a nominee are over and most I seen were never conservative anyway

Unity against Hillary Rotten Criminal is the bottom line.

You’re either on board, or you get left at the station.

Love your ultimatum...great way to persuade those of us who don’t buy the Trump Miracle...
Attitudes like yours will see Trump do a Romney fail...
If I and other non-Trumpers are not on board, you might just get left at the station.
Play nice...

Define conservative unity in 2016.

What percentage of the party consists of conservatives?

What have conservatives in Congress done for conservatism?

What has a conservative President done that is conservative?

Who are the real conservatives in Washington DC?

What have elected conservative ideological purists accomplished?

Can the republican party win an election without independent voters?

What percentage of independents will vote for a conservative?

Could a conservative win key battleground states? Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Penn.

The goal is to pick the most conservative nominee, THAT CAN WIN. And that means winning Electoral votes. That’s a Reality check..

Refighting the primary will cause harm in November. But that’s what Cruzers want, isn’t it? It’s pretty clear that many Cruzers egged on by the likes of Levin prefer the Butcher of Benghazi to Trump. How principled and conservative of them.

Assuming he’s still Majority Leader in January, McConnell will be no friend of President Trump’s and Trump should know that going in.

The goal is to pick the most conservative nominee, THAT CAN WIN.

That was always William F. Buckley's rule. You can either be an ideological conservative and bicker from the sidelines or you can be a pragmatic conservatism and move the ball down the field using the best tools available to you at the time.

The electoral map is key. Start with the 2012 actuals and ask who can flip blue states red. By that metric Trump was and now is the strongest candidate to do that.

Well you always have Hillary to fall back on. Ego before country is a really poor way to vote. Maybe the way to get this country back is with small steps in the right direction.

47% of this country on some type of government assistance are not going to take a giant leap to where most of us ultimately want America to return.

Cruzers and many other cultists think of life in absolute terms. It’s either all or nothing. Their way or no way. This is not about capitulating to Democrats, it’s about understanding 80% of what u want is better than 0%. Levin is a nutcase and should be institutionalized along with Beck. He is doing untold harm to the Republican cause with his petty and childish rants nightly.

He never pretended to be a miracle.

If we don’t win with Trump, we will sink like a rock with Hillary.

We have our nominee. He has been chosen from a field of 17.

Go to the Hillary or Bernie websites and review their agenda.

You prefer her platform on the 2nd Amendment, trade, immigration, ... fine.

Make your choice. Life is all about choices.

It's no ultimatum, it's reality. You either support Trump who is the only candidate who can defeat Hillary, or by default you are giving her aid and comfort and support.

Attitudes like yours will see Trump do a Romney fail...

Don't kid yourself pal, Trump has already exceeded the total primary vote count that Romney had in 2012, and the primary process isn't even officially over. And unlike Romney, Trump won't choke.

If I and other non-Trumpers are not on board, you might just get left at the station. Play nice...

This isn't about 'playing nice' sport, this is about whether our Nation is handed over to Hillary and what would essentially be a third term of Barack Obama. If you don't want that, you better damn well be ON that train.

You are responsible for your own actions. It isn't the responsibility of anyone else to bring you milk and cookies, sooth your feelings and your ruffled fur, and plead with you to do the right thing.

You'll either do it, or you won't. And you'll live with the consequences.

Are you voting for Trump, or for Hillary?

Levin needs to get on Nutri-System(c), he might feel better about himself if he dropped a couple of dress sizes.

What conservatives in congress and what conservative president would you be speaking about ? As far as winning an election without independent voters well that remains to be seen but keep in mind Romney won the Independent vote in 2012. But many feel the base did not turn out as he had a lower vote total than Mc Cain. Apparently many are saying the party is now a populist party and the republican party is dead. So I must ask if this populist party has any interest in representing it’s conservative constituents through out this great nation. If they want their votes they had better be very clear on what this party intends to do to earn those votes.

Wall, enforcement, trade protectionism. All traditional core conservative values and goals.

I notice Cruzers attempting to ludicrously blackmail Trump supporters over whether they’ll vote for the Republican nominee. But as you say, people are responsible for their own actions. I remember when people refused to vote for McCain & Romney and look who we got for eight years. Yeah, that worked out just great for our beloved country.

I don’t like blackmail and foolish freepers who attempt it should be reined in.
