Donald J. Trump said Thursday that transgender people should be allowed to use whatever bathroom they feel most comfortable with including at Trump Tower in New York.
Dipping into a contentious issue by taking a stand many Republicans oppose, Mr. Trump told a town-hall-style event, hosted by NBCs Today show at Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, that when people go to the restroom, they should use the bathroom they feel is appropriate.
Mr. Trump, the Republican presidential front-runner, was responding to a question about a bill that North Carolinas governor signed into law last month that bars individuals in the state from using public bathrooms that dont correspond to their biological sex the one listed on their birth certificate. Since then, there has been a backlash from businesses and celebrities opposed to the states action. And transgender issues have pitted social conservatives against business interests that traditionally have been part of the Republican coalition in the South and elsewhere.
North Carolina did something it was very strong and theyre paying a big price, Mr. Trump said. And theres a lot of problems. And I heard one of the best answers I heard was from a commentator yesterday saying, leave it the way it is, right now.
He added that before the law passed, there had been very few problems but now North Carolina is experiencing an exodus of businesses and strife from people on both sides of the issue.
You leave it the way it is, he said. There have been very few complaints the way it is.
North Carolinas law, which also removed anti-discrimination protections for L.G.B.T. people, and the backlash to it, is now at the heart of the states hotly contested governors race.

Molestation and propositioning in such arenas has always been illegal.
Trump might, just might, be being purely pragmatic. This whole affair seems to be a war of virtue signaling either to the left or right. And if I had to pick one to signal, I’d pick the right. But maybe this whole war is being fought on the wrong fronts. What was the pre-existing law, if any, on restrooms? Why wasn’t there one if there wasn’t?
Trump for President.
A friend of mine had this to say about this subject. I think they deserve a hearing:
“Are we seriously going to make transgender bathrooms a bedrock Republican issue in a campaign for the one political office that can do nothing about it — the POTUS? Are not our hands already filled to the brim with abortion and same-sex marriage?”
And also this:
“For decades social “conservatives” have co-opted the Republican Political Platform—adding conditions and positions that simply do not have anything to do with the Constitutional powers of the Office of the President of the United States.
The President cannot outlaw abortion, the President cannot outlaw same-sex marriage, and the President cannot decree toilet etiquette.
If unhappy and fearful, social conservatives should be applying pressure locally—as our Founders envisioned-—at the municipal, city, county and state levels. These are the levels of government that most directly and immediately impact daily lives and communities. Why is it that social conservatives instead choose to pop up and make themselves a national wedge issue over and over and over and over again—snatching defeat from the jaws of victory?
Social conservatives have taken the political debate for POTUS from the altar, to the bedroom, to the clinic and now to the toilet. Why do this — for what rational political goal?”
THIS 100%
This law gives them the right to be in there, and for you to not be able to do anything about, but leave. And if you tell them to leave - You are criminally liable. And it applies to gym lockers, changing rooms, etc.
You’re either conservative or you’re not.
This is a big issue with conservatives. It is a moral issue, a safety issue.
I am convinced the reason Trump avoids deep substance regarding issues is because he does not want to allow folks to discover his true thought on the issues.
Frankly, I am more concerned over illegal immigration and hordes of third worlders coming into the country through Cruz's green cards than I am about a fraction of the population getting to do what they've been doing for decades.
There are bigger issues involved and we can always sort out the trannies later.
At least he would make it to the final two if running as a republican. Like T****, many of his supporters that I have talked with have a limited point of view, are not intellectually curious at all about anything and while many are good people, can't see anything clearly beyond their front door. So sad.
We could also apply this logic to Muslims in full Muslim-gear going into the restroom alone with your son, when we know they rape boys all the time.
We should ban Muslims from public restrooms.
This is dumb because it basically means that your average GOPer, who virtue signals on social issues, but favors mass amnesty and Obama's TPP, is a real Republican, as long as they want to police bathrooms to keep cross-dressers out of the women's restroom where they've been for decades.
He’s made no secret of his populist aspirations — that he’s there to facilitate a consensus (which on average tends to be to the right of where the government is now).
A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds. They don’t know what arena to pursue what battle in, they just shove a manifesto in your face that reads the same whether they are running for dogcatcher or president. And this is a problem on both sides of the political spectrum.
You may not think thats so swell when a guy follows your 10-year old daughter into the bathroom..
==
This law was purely political theater, how do we know ?
exactly what prevented a man from dressing like a woman and following a year 10 old before the law, zilch. The law changed nothing, again Trump tells the truth, media goes nuts, Trump gains air time.
I don't want a president like that. I also want a president who is emotionally stable.
There is a place and manner to effectively pursue such issues. There are constitutional arguments that the president shouldn’t be caring about this in an official role, though he may care about it in an unofficial role.
I’m “slightly” disappointed that Trump didn’t come up with an answer like “Whatever keeps good public order, it’s fine with me. But this is a policy decision below the office I am running for.” But he might morph into something like that yet, and there are plenty of other examples.
But I think your premise is right. This might be something like 99% virtue signaling to 1% protection of children, given that the main heinous acts that are feared are illegal anyhow.
If you are a Christian, you’d recognize Islam as satanic, transgenderism and homosexuality are satanic deceptions. If a male muzzie engages in homosexuality by raping young boyz, he should be in prison...not our bathrooms.
