27 Percent of New York’s Registered Voters Won’t Be Able to Vote in the State’s Primary
The Nation ^ | 4/18/16 | Ari Berman

In June 2013, North Carolina passed the most sweeping voting restrictions in the country, requiring strict voter ID, cutting early voting and eliminating same-day registration, pre-registration for 16 and 17-year-olds, and out-of-precinct voting, among other political reforms. The state defended its cutbacks in court last summer by invoking, of all places, New York.

“The state of New York has no early voting as opposed to North Carolina that has ten days of early voting,” lawyer Thomas Farr said. “The state of New York has no same-day registration. The state of New York has no out-of-precinct voting. The state of New York has no preregistration.”

-snip-

New York has no early voting (unlike 37 states), no Election Day registration (the state constitution requires voters to register no later than 10 days before an election), and excuse-only absentee balloting (voters have to prove they’ll be out of town or have a disability.)

The voter-registration deadline for the April 19 primary closed 25 days beforehand, when no candidate had even campaigned in New York, and independent or unaffiliated voters had to change their party registrations by October 9, 193 days before April 19, to vote in the closed Democratic or Republican primaries. This will disenfranchise nearly 30 percent of New Yorkers, including, most famously, the Trump children, who didn’t change their registrations from independent to Republican in time.

It’s easy to poke fun at the ignorance of Trump’s kids, but 3 million registered New Yorkers won’t be able to vote in the state’s primary because they are not affiliated with the Democratic or Republican parties. Election Day voter registration, which also increases voter turnout by up to 10 percent, would solve this problem.

The forces desiring to enable vote fraud to the max never sleep.

Anyone whose vote is threatened can simply pretend to be an illegal alien and he/she will be ushered to the front of the line.

Problem solved.

There is only one thing wrong with the article, that I disagree with, but overall pretty good read.

The one thing is it is not disenfranchisement. The rules, and laws were passed long before the election was held, there was plenty of time for people to follow the guidelines of the law, and be able to vote.

Disenfranchisement, would be the unlawful action of denying the right to vote based on specific criteria like, Age, Gender, Race, ethnicity, and political party.

Just as an aside, in past elections, the evangelical church which served as the polling place for my precinct had a large Mexican flag hung on the wall in the meeting area. Absent was any counterbalancing American/Texas flag. That said a LOT about that church (which I would never attend just for that reason.)

The idea of requiring people making even the slightest effort to vote is considered wrong.

193 days before the election necessary to change registration? Unreasonably burdensome. PA deadline is a month before primary.

So some people totally disinterested in and uninformed about the process of electing a political party nominee don’t get to vote? People registered to another party don’t get to sabotage a different party without a 6-month time lead? It’s not enough to attend a rah-rah rally to get to participate? And the problem is ...?

All NY polls for the last six months would have to have been populated by registered NY Republicans, who were registered R by last Oct. Wonder if that’s the case?

It is not a problem. It is a security feature.

The writer's attitude is a problem.

Or, any poll whose call list was not derived from registered R voters is useless.

This article says the Trump children are independents, I have also read that they are Democrats. Which is it? Anyone know for sure?

I am a NYer (upstate) and I like our closed primary. No late registering means no shenanigans. Happy, happy, happy.
