The question then becomes if Trump could possibly win on November 8. That's an open question. Trump is so unpopular across the nation that he could even lose to Hillary in an orange jumpsuit. So on the one hand, if Trump could somehow win the general, being VP would set Cruz up nicely for being the next president. However, being the VP nominee on a losing ticket is almost a sure path to never becoming president. Only one man in the entire history of the country has ever gone from being a losing VP candidate to winning the presidency, and that was FDR.
I can’t agree that Trump couldn’t beat Clinton. Just on a basic human level, she’s got to be the least appealing person we’ve ever seen run for president; and drags a lifetime of unsavory baggage behind her.

That's just absolute nonsense.
For one thing, Trump's negatives are the result of relentless and ongoing efforts.
Hillary's negatives are despite a persistent effort to prop her up; they are more persistent, and she is much less likely to be able to rehabilitate them.
Given the profound, even breathtaking enthusiasm gap, Trump easily has a chance to wipe Hillary out in the general election.
Hypothetical voter matchups 8 months out are the epitome of propaganda; at this point in 1980, Reagan was about 30 points behind an incumbent, and he still blew him out.
Furthermore, Donald Trump can help redefine the GOP demographic map, with the result doing so much damage to the Democrat party, that they will be relegated to minority status at the federal level for decades to come...
But does Bob Dull get points for trying to emulate FDR, who he once or more times called his "hero"?
” Trump is so unpopular across the nation that he could even lose to Hillary in an orange jumpsuit”
So why then does he win all the time? While the political experts tell us the predictive value of “R vs D” comparisons at this point in the cycle is low, the polls (below) indicate the gap is not all that great and varies a lot. One factor that will have impact going forward is the narrowing on the D side, now that Bernie has effectively been eliminated.
I would claim that Trump has a great deal of upside potential. Hillary is very well known, but despite his celebrity “Trump as Politician” is not well known and I believe he will close the gap as the cycle continues. His crossover support in open primaries already proves that Trump will can win votes that Cruz cannot.
Not true. This is the first time on twitter I am seeing blacks and whites coming together. That breaks the establishment.
