Bernie has empathy with his supporters. They sound like their lives are just like his.
Sounds like a family I grew next door too. They had little of anything but were always complaining about not having things the rest of the families on the block had. I even remember the boy my age, 9 at the time, complaining that landing on the moon was a waste and that the money should go to the poor, namely them. They all grew up to be pot heads.
There were many guys like this in the 60s and 70s. Some of them became quite successful later in life. I agree that 40 is a little late, but some bummed around well into their 30s.
I knew a guy who was a taxi driver, a clerk in a hippie bookstore, and the manager of a theatre company with no audience and no money, who eventually managed to become a highly successful IT consultant. He always told me that you should retire when you’re young, and work when you’re old.
I knew guys like him in college in the northeast in the 80s. Lazy, angry, bitter complainers who were always looking for the easy way out.
Marx was broke too. If it wasn’t for his very wealthy friend, Engels, no one would have known Marx’s name.
The Clinton campaign—the same people who gave us Obama’s birth certificate—circulated the story earlier this year, with emphasis on Bernie’s illegitimate son. Politico was more than happy to oblige:

And it certainly reinforces the bum meme. After his first wife divorced him, Bernie gets another woman pregnant and she becomes the mother of his only biological child. The article mentions the boy had a bedroom in Bernie’s apartment, but you also get the impression that Sanders (at some point), essentially washed his hands of his son. He is barely mentioned in what passes for Sanders’ “official” biography, and I’ve never seen an interview with him, or any appearances with his father on the campaign trail. It seems pretty clear that the son (now a grown man) doesn’t care much for his father.
But, as others have observed, severe character and ethical flaws are a resume enhancer in the Democratic party. So, if Bernie pushed his son out of his life years ago (and lived the life of a bum until he was 40), it’s no problem. Just the kind of guy the Dims can rally around.

Bern has a net worth of 1.5 mil but his FIRST real job was at 40 yrs old. Interesting. VERY interesting.
It appears to me that his his entire adult life can be summed up by one of the 10 Commandments: Thou shalt not covet. He has spent his life railing against those who have more than him and desiring to take from those who have to give to those who refuse to work and provide for themselves. Meanwhile, it appears that he has done quite well for himself as long as he acts like any wealth he and his wife have accumulated belongs to her. God help us!
