Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) echoed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) calls to wait for a new president to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by Justice Antonin Scalia.
In a statement Saturday night, Grassley said it's been standard practice over the last 80 years not to confirm a Supreme Court nominee during a presidential election year.
"Given the huge divide in the country, and the fact that this President, above all others, has made no bones about his goal to use the courts to circumvent Congress and push through his own agenda, it only makes sense that we defer to the American people who will elect a new president to select the next Supreme Court Justice," he said.
Grassley's statement falls in line with that of McConnell, who said Scalia should not be replaced until after the 2016 presidential election.
"The American peopleâ should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice," he said in a statement.
In his remarks, Grassley called Scalia, who died Saturday at the age of 79, "an intellectual giant."
"He had an unwavering dedication to the founding document that has guided our country for nearly 230 years," he said of Scalia's interpretation of the Constitution. "His humor, devotion to the Constitution and quick wit will be remembered for years to come."
It takes 2/3rds of the Senate to confirm.
Get it? That means the national socialists would have to have at least 14? Republicans to vote for their choice.
Obama will wait until after the election and nominate a big lefty commie on Wednesday after tthe election. McConnell will rush it thru on Jan 19th at 4AM, where it will clear by one vote attached to huge package of payouts.
I will send Grassley a phone and a pen - maybe go head-to-head with Barry’s phone and pen.
Looks like the GOP is just saying no. bout dang time,
McConnell might not be serious, but I guarantee Grassley is. No nomination goes forward unless McConnell removes Grassley as Judiciary Committee chair.
BTTT!
“Good for McConnell and Grassley. We have to have their backs on this. The Republic is at stake.”
I will have the GOPe boys backs on this if they hold firm and don’t allow a vote.
Also, if the Republican nominee (Trump?) is smart he can use this his advantage. I am willing to bet at least half the country is scared right now the 0bama will get to stack this court with another 0bamunist.
“McConnell might not be serious, but I guarantee Grassley is.”
You think Grassley will hold firm? I hope so!
