MADISON -- Wisconsin deer hunters will now be able to wear blaze pink instead of blaze orange after Gov. Scott Walker signed a bill into law Thursday morning.

Walker's office says the governor signed 21 bills. Most of the legislation was passed by the Assembly and Senate with bipartisan support.

Some female hunters have decried the bill as sexist.

Of all the "-ists" in the world, I have to say that one's my fave.

This seems like a dumb idea and counter to promoting safety. With blaze orange, you have one color that says look out don’t fire. By introducing multiple colors, you dilute the effectiveness of a uniform warming color. It would be like having stop signs in red, blue, green, and rose.

This is not a fashion runway, it’s protective safety gear.

Exactly. I wear orange when I walk the dogs during hunting season, and they wear orange coats, because any hunter instantly recognizes the color.

Pink? That’s crazy.

Pretty sure it doesn’t say women have to wear pink...and there has got to be a homotypesexual man that would look fabulous in pink.

One of the biggest concerns brought up has been safety, but University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Human Ecology. Dr. Majid Sarmadi, one of the nation's leading color experts, has been able to put that to rest.

State Sen. Terry Moulton, R-Chippewa Falls, a blaze pink proponent, explained that before formally proposing the bill, the Legislature's Sportsmen's Caucus decided to study the effect of blaze pink.

In a commentary, Moulton explained that Sarmadi found that blaze pink is equally or more visible than blaze orange products. At the same time, it could also help better hide hunters from deer because of the way they see.

According to the research explained in the column, "humans have three color cones in their eyes - red, green, and blue - that allow us to see the seven colors of the rainbow. While deer have excellent vision that is substantially better than human vision, deer have just two cones = green and blue - that make it difficult for them to see the 'red colors' - orange, red, and pink. Each of these red colors appear to be different shades of gray to deer.

"Deer can see blue, green, yellow and UV colors. Orange, being a 'red color,' is difficult for deer to see. However, pink is even more difficult for deer to see because it is further from yellow, a color that deer can see, on the color spectrum than orange. Because of this, Dr. Sarmadi's research shows that blaze pink is actually more difficult for deer to see than blaze orange, making hunters more camouflaged in blaze pink."
