The Obama era represents a peak in black votersâ identification with the Democratic Party, which will have to fight to retain their loyalty.
While President Obama made history by becoming the first black president in 2008, black voters made history four years later. In 2012, for the first time ever, black voter turnout nationally surpassed that of all other groups. But that is unlikely to happen in tomorrowâs election. An even bigger question to consider, however, is whether it will ever happen again. Black voter enthusiasm has been at an all-time high during the era of the first black president, but will this enthusiasm last in the post Obama era?
Clearly there were black voters before Barack Obama, but to put in context the difference between black voter turnout in the Obama era and black voter turnout before, consider this. In 2008 two million more black voters showed up at the polls than had four years before. Among young black voters ages 18 to 24, there was an 8 percent increase in turnout from 2004 to 2008, the highest increase among any demographic, across racial, gender and generational lines.
In a phone interview, Andra Gillespie, a Political Scientist based at Emory University said, âPeople historically thought black voters participated in the political process and voted because they had confidence in their own ability to effect change in the political system, irrespective of whether they believed politicians cared about what they thought. But there was some work that came out about 25 years ago that suggests thatâs not true and that in fact that blacks feel empowered when they see blacks in positions of power.â Gillespie explained that this research did find a connection between the number of likely black voters and black elected leaders..

I think Dems are open to vote for a non traditional Republican.
Republicans in the south have alienated black voters with David Duke types running. They also want handouts and R’s are sold as the boogey man stealing the goodies.
Post Obama it might be possible to reach out. Blacks are the primary victims of open borders - loss of unskilled labored jobs and replaced politically by Hispanics.
IMMIGRATION, legal and illegal, hurts blacks the worst. They are losing jobs and seeing their wages depressed. We have a surplus of labor yet still bring in over a million and a half foreign workers every year at a time when our labor participation rates are at a 38 year low.
Sadly, no.
Agree.
R’s need to make immigration/jobs THE issue in the campaign and start putting wedges in the Democrat voter base.
Hispanics, btw, hate blacks and vice versa usually. There’s no love lost between the two groups.
Dems are great at chopping up America and finding ‘dealbreaker’ issues: Gays = homo marriage; Blacks = kkk/handouts; Hispanics = deporting granny/handouts.
Young women = abortion. Young people = pot; free college.
HAHAHAHA. If by “end” they mean losing .000001% of the black vote then yeah. The two Trump gals might switch for Trump.
Great article. Dems are suspicious when dealing with high taxes. Blacks are suspicious when seen across the street.
Also, good news. “We are witnessing the end of the House of Clinton.”
“There is the stench of political death around Hillary, Bill, Chelsea and the entire House of Clinton. You could feel it when Republican front-runner Donald Trump hit back hard over the “penchant for sexism” charge by basically calling Hillary Clinton an enabler in the former president’s sexual shenanigans. When have we ever seen the Clintons back off? But they did.”
Trump should be praised for the simple reason of triggering the destruction of the House of Clinton.
the first half black [ hapa popolo ]
still waitin for the first true black man
how about Allen West?
Why do they continue to call him black when he crawled out of a white womb ? It is as if reality has no meaning any more.
I think we might even be seeing the end of political parties. It might take a while, but frankly I am sick of all of them.
I’ll believe it when I see it.
Yes, interesting that the Beast published it.
Trump, I think, can get up to 30% of the black vote.
Hopefully not for the blacks. Hopefully they will get tired of being used, and stand up with the rest of America to take back our nation from the criminals and terrorist organizations that now run it.
Political consultant Basil Smikle, who is African American...told me, "It is unlikely that Obama-era levels of black voter participation can be sustained without hard evidence that leaders have improved the economic status of black families across the country."
No such evidence exists, and the reason is fairly clear: 0bama has been death on one vital portion of the black vote, the black middle class. It would be trite if it weren't so fundamental to the outlook of the Marxist Left, but it's a fact: the petit bourgeoisie are a despised class, being an impediment to the revolution that creates the Marxian ideal of a benevolent State under the guidance of a ruling cadre, that consists strictly of a dependent working class. The middle class has no place in this model.
That parts of this middle class happen to be black and happen to have given 0bama a support disproportionate to their own interests out of racial solidarity is a poorly-kept secret. That 0bama and the Democrats have enacted policies profoundly destructive to that middle class is blatantly obvious: abortion, health-care cost rises, discouragement of small business, all of these things that serve to suppress the middle class serve to increase social control on the part of the elite. Worse, the emphasis on racism and the incredibly corrosive, violent black urban culture so promoted in the media have served to marginalize black citizens who do not really wish to act like urban thugs. The elite, the Sharptons, Wrights, Jacksons, and yes, the 0bamas, et al, in their thousand-dollar suits, get along just fine. The welfare crowd flourishes. Joe Lunchbucket does not.
This assault on the black middle class has been very poorly reported. For the social justice ideologues the very existence of the black middle class is an embarrassment. Yet they, and the white, and the Hispanic middle classes are the principal hope for prosperity for everyone in their racial or ethnic categories. This is the part of America that works, and the Left doesn't want it to work, for if it does their power diminishes. And 0bama has been scrupulous in preventing it from working.
There is something very cruel and ugly in that, and if the inhabitants of the black middle class now feel alienated, they are justified. The first black President has done nothing for them; he hates them and has sought their destruction. And their white friends have been alienated by a stream of racial invective unmatched by anything since the Ku Klux Klan. They too are middle class, they too are enemies of the elite, and they too have suffered. Race was always a thin excuse: this was a war on the middle class.
Reality had to be discarded because it kept exposing lies and corruption.
What is the single most accomplishment obama has done for this country? He’s gotten the blacks to hate him too
Yes please...Colonel West...I would vote for him in an instant... Twice, hey if the democrats can do, so can I.
The Baine of the USA.
“President Obama made history by becoming the first black president in 2008”....
He is half black and a bastard child.
