An attempt to create timelines of all world history
Wikitimelines ^ | Janurary, 3, 2016 | Jeff Roehl

For the most intelligent people in the world, here at freerepublic.com, this is our initial beta of timelining all of known history.

At:

http://wikitimelines.net/

We are attempting to make world history more understandable, interesting, approachable and fun.

You can place any of the millions of Wikipedia articles on the timeline, 6 at a time.

Keep in mind, we are currently only displaying dates, on the timeline, through Wikipedia, from 1000 AD and forward, in history. We will get to 0 AD through 999 AD and BC dates when we get more interest. We would like to include any internet website, eventually.

There are some errors and glitches we are still working on correcting. Forgive us. But report them to us, if you are feeling bold!

As my user profile does not show it, I have been an enthusiastic member of FR for around 15 years.

G*d bless freerepublic, Jim Robinson and the United States of America!

Thanks Jeff

Won’t all fit on my laptop screen, too wide. Also lacks clarity, I’m not sure what I’m looking at in the upper panel.

Think it's already been started.

Sucks big time ... can only deal with a very limited selection centering on Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael 1430AD-Present. GFunded by Gofundme - one programmer is a Romanian. Just pay them $10.

It scrolls right to left with your mouse.

You can add any Wikipedia article you would like.

Probably futile since there are entire imiportant eras of history where the timelifes are bit iffy.

Thanks for the ping SunkenCiv.

Since the initial samples were all biographical, I pasted in the Wikipedia entry for the US. It took a second for it to process, but sure enough it generated timelines based on that entry. Pretty impressive.

I like the preview area that you can slide and click. Not sure about the usefulness of the timeline data though. For instance, in the US entry, about 10 timelines get generated. One is informing me that ridership on Amtrak increased by 43% between 2000 and 2012. Another states that from 1980 to 2008, males were 77% of homicide victims and 90% of offenders. Large, important chunks of US history don't have these timelines. Great Depression, WWII 1941-1945, Civil War, etc... but I suppose you're at the mercy of people using language in their Wikipedia entries such as "From xxxx to yyyy" or "Between the years xxxx and yyyy" so that the parser can generate the timeline...

Overall, I like it. It's another way to view history which is a noble goal. Not everyone needs to read Herodotus' The Histories to develop a context for the Battle of Thermopylae when a timeline like this could be quickly navigated and explored as in-depth as the reader had time to do. I wish you luck in developing it and hope to see it as a feature in Wikipedia articles in the future!

Thanks, I may check it out in more detail at some point, when it’s time to build an ancient history timeline with the revised chrono.

It tried William Jefferson Clinton and Jeffery Epstein, but it didn’t come up with anything except for Mr. Blythe.
