They also knew what would happen to an openly gay ambassador in the MidEast/N.Africa region if the terrorists captured him.
MY guess is that Stevens had to go, gay or not.He knew too much and was becoming a loose cannon, saying the wrong things to the wrong people and hill/obama found out about it.Perhaps that why they made sure there was no security and what there was had already been compromised so much so that when the fighting started they laid down their weapons and fled.
