Ted Cruz on Friday put a bit of distance between himself and arguably his closest ally in the presidential race: Donald Trump.
Kicking off a two-day swing through Iowa, the U.S. senator from Texas was asked about Trump's apparent openness Thursday to a national registry of American Muslims in the wake of the recent Paris terrorist attacks.
"I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's, but not a fan of government registries of American citizens," Cruz told reporters before a town hall at Briar Cliff University. The "First Amendment protects religious liberty."
Asked Thursday by NBC News if he wanted to monitor Muslims in America through a database, Trump replied he would "certainly implement that." The suggestion has drawn comparisons to Nazi Germany and has sparked bipartisan criticism.
Cruz has cultivated a chummy relationship with the billionaire, declining to directly criticize him on a host of issues. He refused to go further Friday when asked again about Trump's idea, reiterating his belief that reporters just want to see the two duke it out.
Cruz was joined at the town hall by U.S. Rep. Steve King of Iowa, who endorsed the senator Monday. Speaking with reporters, King also expressed some opposition to Trump's idea of a Muslim registry, saying he did not know how it would work in practice.

Reading comprehension is a short suit among many Trumpbots here.
Go, Trump, GO!!
I know you’re a Trump fan, Jim. I happen to be a Cruz fan but clearly Cruz not reacting to something Trump didn’t say is a non-story.
Don’t blame me Cruz got conned by the MSM.
I had nothing to do with it.
Excuse me? Cruz should know better? Cruz did know better. He did not criticize Trump. He also said the media was just trying to start trouble.
You should know better.
Sorry to see so many people on this thread who have swallowed the media bait. I thought we were supposed to know better.
Trump did not say that. Rush made that perfectly clear. He was talking about immigrants.
Cruz was brilliant at not swallowing the bait. He simply stated his position and praised Trump.
Why are we all idiots (present company excepted.)
That's good strategy on Cruz's part as he would have better luck juggling flaming chain saws while skateboarding than poke at Trump.
Trump used to be pro abortion, pro homosexual, pro government health care, pro democrat. He’s conservative now but he can’t be trusted.
Cruz or lose
Cruz used to never say the word “deport” when it came to illegals.
Cruz used to love the idea of increasing H-1B visas by 500%.
That was, of course, before he jumped aboard the Trump Train and subscribed to many facets of the Trump Doctrine.
I guess he, too, “cannot be trusted”. Your logic fails.
Oh, wait...we’re only supposed to scrutinize Trump’s history (got a link for that weak diatribe you rattled?)
Btw....welcome to FR. I see you’ve signed up today to post your Trump drivel.
Will Levin threaten to no longer support Cruz for jumping on the media smear of Trump?
I don’t think it’s been proven that Cruz actually tried to use the media smear, against Trump. I’ve seen another article, or post, that contradicted this.
I don’t see Cruz falling for the MSM BS trap. Maybe I’m mistaken...at least I would hope not.
Cruz is walking a tightrope with some of his comments here. But if he decides it’s time to poke at Trump, no problem. It’s his risk to take and he is free to pull the pin any time he likes.
And don’t forget, what they are saying about Trump right now because he is high in the polls, they will say to anyone trying to get where he is at....
Rule of Thumb: If you have anything you don’t want people to know about you or your family or friends, work place, high school, college, ideals you once lived by, people you dated, etc....don’t run for office of any kind, because it will come out...and it probably won’t look good....
Yawn. I just answered you because you have a hissy fit unless someone answers your posts.
LOL
You are really a boresome writer who doesn’t comprehend other writers well. NO AMERICAN CITIZEN should be put on a government list due to their religion, period. No list of Catholics, no list of Baptists, no list of any religion and you can use your own definition of any religion or group of people you want as your definitions mean absolutely nothing to me. My response to you is over. Go bore someone else.
Ok, I was too harsh. He doesn’t suck, and he’d make a good VP. I just think he doesn’t have a chance at winning and hope he and Trump get along.
So how long before there will be a national registry for Christians for the government to keep tabs on them ?
Because knowing the abuse of power of government this is where this will lead to.
The US Constitution protects us from this sort of thing.
The Trump supporters took the bait.
There is a whole host of other things that the Trump supporters are being baited, they just don’t know it yet.
They are jumping at any opertunity to tear Ted Cruz down with “ got ya “ ..... The funny thing is ? Why tear down a guy when their guy is in the top spot ?
Irrational .. Insecure...
