I’m also amazed how long Simpson’s one time fellow congressmember, “Butch” Otter, has been sticking around in the ID governorship. He’s been there since 2006 and seems to underperform what you’d expect a Republican would do in that state, particularly in 2006 and 2014.

ID is a state where term limits for state officials are badly needed. To give an idea of how long he’s been desirous of the Governorship, he first ran for it in 1978(!) after 6 years in the state legislature. Otherwise, other than for an 8-year gap (but remained active politically), he’s been in office continuously for 35 of the last 43 years.

It’s curious he almost lost reelection in 1994 (of all years) to his 3rd term as Lt Governor after being convicted of DUI (which forced him to abandon his run for Governor that year). Had it not been for the GOP tide, he would’ve been out.
