Most of the people I met in Americaâs heartland want big money out of politics, and think the Supreme Courtâs âCitizens Unitedâ decision was shameful.
Most are also dead-set against the Trans Pacific Partnership. In fact, theyâre opposed to trade agreements, including NAFTA, that they believe have made it easier for corporations to outsource American jobs abroad.
A surprising number think the economic system is biased in favor of the rich. (Thatâs consistent with a recent Quinnipiac poll in which 46 percent of Republicans believe âthe system favors the wealthy.â)
The more conversations I had, the more I understood the connection between their view of âcrony capitalismâ and their dislike of government. They donât oppose government per se. In fact, as the Pew Research Center has found, more Republicans favor additional spending on Social Security, Medicare, education, and infrastructure than want to cut those programs.
Rather, they see government as the vehicle for big corporations and Wall Street to exert their power in ways that hurt the little guy. They call themselves Republicans but many of the inhabitants of Americaâs heartland are populists in the tradition of William Jennings Brian.
I also began to understand why many of them are attracted to Donald Trump. I had assumed they were attracted by Trumpâs blunderbuss and his scapegoating of immigrants. Thatâs part of it. But mostly, I think, they see Trump as someone whoâll stand up for them â a countervailing power against the perceived conspiracy of big corporations, Wall Street, and big government.
Trump isnât saying what the moneyed interests in the GOP want to hear. Heâd impose tariffs on American companies that send manufacturing overseas, for example. Heâd raise taxes on hedge-fund managers. (âThe hedge-fund guys didnât build this country,â Trump says. âTheyâre âgetting away with murder.â).

Little dude is only 4’-11”
Exactly.
It’s hard for people to separate the two (personal vs. professional). One can filter over into the other but, for the most part, they can and should be separated.
A friend saw Reich the other day and offered to help him carry his flat screen TV. An angry Reich informed him it was his IPad!
Will the real Robert Reich please stand up?
Hmm let see
Lowest labor participation rate since 1978
Maybe they are listening Mr Reich because the progressive polices you, and the rest of the Politcal class, have embraced have so utterly failed for 30 years to do anything but destroy the US working class?
I have to laugh. Reich, One of the biggest Clinonite pimps of Crony Capitalism writes here whining about Crony Capitalism!
But did you not hear? Obama has created more jobs then Reagan! /s
Of course the fact that population of the USA is 100 million larger then it was in 1988 was curiously missed by the “news media” on this issue.
Mr Reich,
The things that resonates about Trump is he has proven leadership skills and he brings an outsider view.
For the last 30 years we have elected career politicians to DC. Most notably your personal hero Bill Clinton Mr Reich.
Career politicians see everything in terms of politics. They look for a political answer to any problem. We need someone who will look at the problem, listen to his advisers, then say âthis is the right thing to doâ rather then âthis is the politically correct thing to doâ.
For a change we need to send someone to DC who has the leadership skills to surround himself with good people, the habit of listening to the advice of those experts instead of his political advisers, and the backbone to make the tough decisions. We need someone to go to DC and say âthis, this and this is nonsense, we arenât doing that any more no matter what the Donor class saysâ
A career politician, being part of the party machine, is not even going to see those issues in that light. Instead he is going to see the politics of the issue. It just how they are wired.
By the way I've got some fabulous land in central south Florida to sell you and a rare one of a kind bridge in New York...let me know if you're interested.
They should rename ‘Salon’ and call it ‘Bullsh*t, Lies, and Nonsense’ and let it go out as that.
Don’t vote for him, but you need to find something else to hang your hat on. “Thrice married”....tell me, how did you feel about the twice married Reagan?
I might make you feel cold too.... I am on my 3rd wife. Just last week we celebrated our 44th anniversary and our Honeymoon has never stopped.
I hope Cruz finds a way to break through to the top, but it seems doubtful at the moment, perhaps tonight will do it.
If you ever see me running for an office, don’t vote for me, I have been “thrice married”.
Here’s the truth Robert Reich - we see Democrats as liars and totalitarians. They hate us, they hate our values and they happily bring in 30 million illegals to keep themselves in power (illegals are the new blacks) - then they turn to us and tell us to court the abortion vote.
We hate them.
Robert Reich did you see the ‘ever so gentle liberal elite professor’ on the Missouri campus? “We need some muscle over here to beat dis guy’s face in - he’s mouthin’ off” Yes, she would grind her boots into our faces for eternity - and we know it.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the LORD.” (Isaiah 55:8)
God works in ways we don’t often understand. He works through men and women, young and old, rich and poor, and through Black, White, Brown, and Yellow people!
Rich men in the Holy Bible God used for His Glory?:
Solomon
Abraham
Isaac
David
Job
Joseph
Go Trump! I pray God uses you too!
A beautiful response. Still despise the man, but that was a very nice response.
Such a wonderful point!
I will add that often God used not the best people to achieve His goals.
Time has come.
