LETTER: We want candidates who can deliver in office, not ones with bulleted lists
boston globe ^ | SEPTEMBER 26, 2015

BEING A New Hampshire resident, and a hard target for 2016 presidential hopefuls, I have been reading more and more articles on the qualities and shortcomings of Donald Trump. Like many Americans, I considered Trump as someone who was spoiled by wealth, and from an early age, and I took him about as seriously as others take his hair. Recent articles in the media have made me reconsider those assumptions.

I don’t support his views on immigration and basic civil rights, but I do recognize his ability to solve business problems and paralyze political opposition. The media, on the other hand, continue to criticize him for a lack of detail, and demand the requisite candidate manifesto — the so-called multipoint plan — that will solve all our social and political ills.

I began my young engineering career in the Apollo program. I don’t recall President Kennedy or anyone else releasing a multipoint plan to get to the moon by the end of the decade. It required trust in a leader’s ability and a massive bureaucracy of thoughtful people working toward a goal.

We need to find elected officials, whether Trump or someone else, who can solve our problems when in office, and not candidates who spoon-feed bullet points to anxious journalists.

Cruz time in the Senate “not doing anything” is the best argument for him. When the odds are stacked against them, when every single one of your peers sees things differently, it takes incredible fortitude to stick up and fight for your principles. There is no way he could get legislation passed in a Congress run by Democrats and RINOs. The fact that he tried and never caved into them proves to us what he stands for. And we know that as President, when he does have the power, he will continue to fight for the same principles he did when it was much less likely he would successfully pass them.

If we have someone who has a track record of getting things done, it’s only a good thing if they are committed to doing things we want done. If they’re good at getting things done and they want to enact socialized medicine, then that’s not such a good thing. In his speech in Arizona, Trump said “sorry, conservatives” but he believes in universal medical coverage.

One thing for sure, the smart money will never be with Cruz or Trump.

Cruz is the largest fund raiser.. most all less than $80..
by people that NEVER get polled..

Yup. The “smart” money will never be with him. Rove and the GOPe big money backers would rather lose the presidency to a democrat than allow a conservative like Cruz to win.

Good thing about Trump. He doesn’t need their money. And that makes him a very dangerous man to the establishment uniparty.

I love Cruz and hope he makes it, but will not be ashamed to vote for Trump if he gets the nomination.

Yeah, we have all seen your cute evasion that you think lets you avoid giving a direct answer.

So once again, how come Cruz praises Trump and never criticizes him?

True, but he took that money and built an empire. We’ve all read stories of people who have inherited large sums of money and squandered it. So, that tells me he didn’t waste what his dad left him. Are you jealous?

Whatever. I would be good with voting for either one, depending on what happens between now and March. I have probably voted for Cruz at least 3 more time than you have in the past. The thing all you Trump bashing people forget is that if it were not for Trump getting in, Jeb would probably be the one at 25%-30% and Cruz would likely still be at his 6% or so. There are some things I like about both guys and some things I don’t like. Trump did not vote for cloture on getting TPA for Obama and he did not vote yes on the Corker Iran deal. Trump also has not come out for a 500% increase in H1-B visas. Cruz has done all of that this year. It was once an easy choice for me to back Cruz but he is making it harder by the stuff he does.

“if not a friggen MOLE...”

So you think that Cruz might be praising a mole. So you’re putting Cruz in the position of being either naive or duplicitous.

Trump/Cruz - the only 2 candidates worth voting for. Sorry to say - if anyone other than these 2 gets the nomination - I stay home.

Funny thing is - none of the candidates have any legislative successes. SO your point is moot.None of the candidates other than Rick Santorum and John Kasich have any legislative success. The president isn’t a dictator? I guess obama didn’t get your memo. And which candidate among them has the ability to make government work? You are batting a thousand here. Trump has major successes to boast and Cruz has some success in the attorney field, so I don’t know who your candidate is, but other than those 2 - and the two I mentioned - the rest are duds. Okay- Santorum and Kasich are duds, but you get my drift.

Being cunning can appear to be duplicitous..
Never show yer cards.. Trump could be a mole..

Him his father/mother all of his Siblings and ALL of his children and Most of his close friends are ALL flaming liberals TODAY, NOW.. the ones still alive.. Long term inveterate liberals..

Maybe he’s a republican(maybe) but doubt he is anywhere close to being a conservative..
IF your not a conservative should NOT mean a thing to you..

IF you ARE.. Trump should have ten foot pole marks over him..
Liberalism is indeed a political disease..

You make such general statements that aren’t necessarily true. Trump has friends on both sides of the aisle - you sound politically naive - and your constant bashing is tiresome.

So you think a * WARNING * is NOT in order?..
A look before you leap.. a take it easy...
A “be wary of greeks bearing gifts”.. is beyond the pale?..

I don’t know anymore about Cruz than I do about Trump or Obama for that matter..

All I know is what they “DID”....... and might do again..
Which makes me double think about liberals bearing gifts..
Trojan Horse’s being what they are... and all that..
You do know many republicans voted for Obama..

And am not shy about saying it.. if I believed Trump all’s well then...
Trouble is I DON’T..

I love Cruz, dammit. You don’t have to sell me on him. But we’re not going to do what we did in the last two primaries where we knocked off all our leading candidates one by one until we got stuck with the dregs. If Trump is the dirty lowdown dog you think he is, he’ll take himself out soon enough. Meanwhile, as long as he’s doing a great job against our common enemy in the uniparty, I’ll thank the Trump trolls not to crap on our threads.

Trump is half as good as Cruz but twice as good as everyone else.

Ultimately Trump appears to be sticking his finger in the wind and supporting what most of the public wants. The public is far more conservative on immigration than our government is now, so Trump’s right on that. The public wants absolutely no social security or medicare reform though, which is why early on Trump said he wouldn’t change those programs at all. Trump doesn’t seem to know what to say on the same-sex marriage/religious liberty issue because it’s a 50/50 issue in the polls.

It’s pure speculation whether Bush would be top of the polls now without Trump. Romney had a lot of challengers that pushed him out of the top many times. Other candidates are higher than Bush now besides Trump. Without Trump in, his support may have gone to Cruz or others, not Bush.

Trump is willing to criticize everybody who challenges his position at the top. He isn’t just targetting RINOs. He would rip a conservative like Cruz too if Cruz started getting close to him in the polls. I thought he was a great campaigner, but am surprised that he made the comment about Carly in Rolling Stone. That was a totally unforced error. It directly led to her hurting him in the debate and her rising in the polls. That lack of discipline is very worrisome and troubling in a candidate and could be a major handicap in the general election.

I had read that about Trump too. I dont think he was/is a spoiled rich kid at all. He made his way and did what he considered best for him and his companies....nothing wrong with that. He has drive.

Trump is not a politician and makes non politician mistakes but he is learning fast. You may think it is speculation to suppose Jeb would be leading minus Trump but by their actions the GOP-E shows they don’t agree with you. The GOP establishment planned to use the same model with Jeb that they used to get Romney nominated. They encouraged a crowded field to dilute the vote and allow Jeb to “run against the base” and win. The GOP-E tilted the field for Jeb by changing the primary rules this time around to make his money advantage even more of a factor. The only thing that prevents a Jeb nomination from happening is somebody with more money available getting in and upsetting that plan. Trump did that. I submit that most of the venom you see being unleashed on Trump from the GOP-E and their media minions is due to the realization that they have lost control of the process. They are showing you by their reaction who worries them the most and it is not Cruz. That should be a clue to all.
