Rand Paul rallies Utahns, calls Donald Trump mania 'insane'

OREM — Republican presidential candidate Rand Paul had one word for the Donald Trump phenomenon that seems to be sweeping the country: "Insane."

Asked if he thought Trump would eventually flame out, the freshman Kentucky senator said, "We can only hope so."

Paul's comments came Saturday after a raucous rally at Alder Home Security that attracted about 600 Utahns who waved red and white towels and clamored for "President Paul." He only disappointed supporters when he declined to crowd surf after his speech saying, "Maybe next time."

In Utah on the last day of a five-state western campaign swing, Paul appeared to be at home wearing jeans, cowboy boots and a blue blazer. His message about freedom, returning power to states, ending government spying on Americans and lowering taxes resonated with the like-minded crowd.

Paul, an ophthalmologist, also toured the Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City and posed for a photo across from the National Security Administration data center in Bluffdale.

In a brief news conference in Orem, Paul said people will ultimately "come to their senses" about Trump, adding voters want a candidate with substance and substantive ideas to fix the country.

"I think saying, 'Mexicans will pay for it' is an incredibly stupid thing to stay," he said of Trump's comments about building a wall to secure the border. "This sort of hostility towards Hispanics is something that is really bad for our party, bad for the country."

BS, his voting record is the second most conservative in the Senate... second only to Cruz (who BTW voted for TPA while Rand didn’t.)

Isn't it amazing how Rand Paul was in the "top 3" a year ago...and now he just seems like a petulant child? That is the "Trump Effect".

Trump be like...

How is making Mexico pay for the wall "hostility to 'Hispanics'"? Talk about stupid.

That's fine, I appreciate his conservative creds I really do. Rand acted like a bigmouth, sniping, weasel jerk at the debate and that cost him his chance. His polls have slipped to almost nothing. Did you notice that Trump, as usual was kind of a bigmouth jerk himself but it didn't cost him in the polls, in fact it increased his support by quite a lot? Hmmmm, maybe the voters are ready to hear what Trump is saying don't you think?

Rand is out of it even if he doesn't realize it yet. So who does he want to get the nod instead of Trump? Jeb Bush? Because it sure isn't going to be Rand Paul.

Trump is a fraud. His Johnny come lately conservatism didn’t really come to the surface until 2011, one year after the tea party wave, while he was mulling on whether or not to run in 2012. Before that he was a self identified liberal.

If any other candidate had the background Trump had they would be kicked to the curb but since people like the cut of his jib when it comes to political correctness they give him pass after pass. Well, he gets no pass from me. If he is the nominee, I vote constitution again just like I did with Romney.

Rand has nothing to loose. These guys get their political butts kicked and on the way down they start throwing dodo out.

By now he’s probably working for another candidate anyway.

Hey look, a queer Rand Paul supporter coming to mock conservative Christians.

Now we know who is in Rand Paul’s 2 percent.

Queer? Maybe in your dreams but no. And I’m not mocking Christians you a**hat, just those who would zealously worship Trump as if he was a gift from God. Now why don’t you just put on that dunce cap of yours and sit in the corner like the feeble minded little miscreant that you are.

Queer? Maybe in your dreams but no.

You outed yourself with your opposition to the border wall. Think the new term is "cuckservative," which I've seen some people around here use.

And I’m not mocking Christians you a**hat, just those who would zealously worship Trump

Accusing conservative Christians of "worshipping" a man is pretty rich coming from a Rand Paul guy!

Who has done that? Anyone here?

The only people I saw doing anything like that was this small group of obese woman at the Iowa State Fair or somewhere. They were doing this cheer leading skit, shaking around and chanting they loved Hillary because she's a women. Weird stuff.

This sort of hostility towards Hispanics... First it builds the straw man. Then it attacks the straw man. That is how to win against the straw man.

Kinda like Trump's fans eh?
You sure that's the one you want to use to compare crowd quality and excitement?

But I see what you mean, the excitement of the guy in the orange jumpsuit and that grade school principle behind him at the "Rand" rally is indescribable.

Rand Paul On Shutdown: "Even Though It Appeared I Was Participating In It, It Was A Dumb Idea"
I said throughout the whole battle that shutting down the government was a dumb idea. Even though it did appear as if I was participating in it, I said it was a dumb idea. And the reason I voted for it, though, is that it's a conundrum. Here's the conundrum. We have a $17 trillion debt and people at home tell me you can't give the president a blank check. We just can't keep raising the debt ceiling without conditions. So unconditionally raising the debt ceiling, nobody at home wants me to vote for that and I can't vote for that. But the conundrum is if I don't we do approach these deadlines. So there is an impasse. In 2011, though, we had this impasse and the president did negotiate. We got the sequester. If we were to extend the sequester from discretionary spending to all the entitlements we would actually fix our problem within a few years.

Rand Paul: Time for GOP to soften war stance
...by softening its edge on some volatile social issues and altering its image as the party always seemingly "eager to go to war... We do need to expand the party and grow the party and that does mean that we don't always all agree on every issue" ... the party needs to become more welcoming to individuals who disagree with basic Republican doctrine on emotional social issues such as gay marriage... "We're going to have to be a little hands off on some of these issues ... and get people into the party," Paul said.

Rand Paul's immigration speech
...The Republican Party must embrace more legal immigration.

Unfortunately, like many of the major debates in Washington, immigration has become a stalemate-where both sides are imprisoned by their own rhetoric or attachment to sacred cows that prevent the possibility of a balanced solution.

Immigration Reform will not occur until Conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. I am here today to begin that conversation.

Let's start that conversation by acknowledging we aren't going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants.

If you wish to work, if you wish to live and work in America, then we will find a place for you...

This is where prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society.

Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors.

Rand Paul calls on conservatives to embrace immigration reform
Latinos, should be a natural constituency for the party, Paul argued, but "Republicans have pushed them away with harsh rhetoric over immigration." ...he would create a bipartisan panel to determine how many visas should be granted for workers already in the United States and those who might follow... [and the buried lead] "Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers...

Rand Slams Congress for Funding Egypt's Generals: 'How Does Your Conscience Feel Now?'

Better Gazoo than a fraud liberal in conservative sheepskin. Trump is a trojan horse, and here you are just begging to let him in. Its disgusting how so many people can be deceived. There is a contingent of smart FReepers who see through the charade and that makes me feel like all is not lost, and I’m sure as the campaign goes on the veil will be lifted more and more and you may even ask yourself.. what did I see in this guy?
