MTV is at death’s door

Viacom is vulnerable in that many of its networks, including MTV, Nickelodeon and Spike, target youngsters — “the segment of the population that’s most rapidly and definitively abandoning linear TV,” according to the analyst.

I finally figured out a few years ago that they were saying “Sharia don’t like it”. I had always wondered why some chick named Sheree had a problem with them rocking the Casbah....

That one fits too.

What popped into my head after I posted is that at that time I didn’t know wtf Sharia was. I wish I still didn’t.

MTV was entertaining in the early days when they aired music videos. When the channel ceased being a Music channel, it became another run-of-the-mill crapfest.

I loved MTV in the 80s. They lost me some time in the 90s when they stopped showing music videos, which was strange since they are called “Music Television”.

They officially stopped being "Music Television" a long time ago.

If MTV could've continued being a music video channel, they would have. It was a great business model. Free content provided by the record companies. The free ride ended when the record companies, seeing that MTV was rolling in the dough, wanted them to kick in paying for what were increasingly expensive videos.

To further complicate the matter, there were more videos than minutes in the day. This is a problem when you've just spent a half million dollars on a video and MTV won't play it. So how do you get them to play it? You pay them! Oops, isn't that "Payola" and illegal?

Seeing the writing on the wall, MTV had no choice but to back away from videos. But they still needed cheap programming. And thus, reality TV was born. A gift from MTV.

My generation was greeted going to and from deployments by groups primarily consisting of Viet Nam vets who wanted to make damned sure we didn’t experience what you went through when you came home.

Thank you for your service and your support!

I also remember “Night Tracks” on TBS on Friday/Saturday nights...took 8 houra of their programming so that is how big music videos were (4 hours, then repeat of first 4 hours)...”Night Flight” on USA Network...”Friday Night Videos” on NBC (after Saturday Night Live)...VH1 as well...the Reagan years, music TV as it should be...good times.

It all started with “Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert”, it started out showing bands live, but then it pretty much just showed music videos.

Miss those days.

I spent evenings watching old Midnight Special clips on YouTube a lot of bands you never thought were on TV, like early Steely Dan.

I think it's "Sharif don't like it", describing the leader who's trying to get the natives to stop "rockin' the Casbah" and who wanted the pilots to drop their bombs between the minarets.

After all, it's the Sharif who drove his Cadillac and went cruisin' down the ville, with the muezzin standing on the radiator grill.

"Silent Running - Mike and the Mechanics"

That one in particular has had the greatest impression on me ... not so much the video, but the words to the song.

I work in a Department of Defense office and, for the last 10 years, in conjuction with the signature that I use for my emails, I have added the following passage:

Swear allegiance to the flag,
Whatever flag they offer;
Never hint at what you really feel.
Teach the children quietly,
For, someday, sons and daughters
Will rise up and fight while we stood still.

No kickback on it yet but I'm sure that my name is on someone's list somewhere ...

But then, again, I'm sure I was on some list before, just by being a member of FreeRepublic.
