Oddly enough, when I was a boy we had some neighbors just over the hill named Rushing, two families headed by two brothers and their sons were big on souping up their cars, even took an old John Deere and built their own little dirt track on the farm. It was very small of course but they raced on it. One of my earliest memories is of playing with an old Indy race car with no engine that they had. One kid would sit in it and the others would push him around. The boys still live in the area but they are old men now.
When droves of spectators showed up---NASCAR was born.
